Chapter 7
Jason still didn’t talk to me the next day. He ignored me in Spanish too. So far the day had been normal for him because I have not heard about him hating incontinent people. Maybe no one read the note when they found it and it got thrown out.
Lunch time came and I headed to the cafeteria. I waited in line and I put in my number and got my food and found Ashland again. I sat with her. “Why are you always sitting with me?” she asked. “I want to be friends,” I said. “We both wear these,” I pointed to my crotch. “You don’t be friends with someone because they wear the same underwear as you. That is so weird,” she said. “I want to be friends with someone my kind,” I said. “My ex boyfriend dumped me because he hates incontinent people.” “Fuck him. There are always going to be closed minded airheads. I don’t think we have anything in common.” “We’re incontinent,” I pointed out. “That’s something in common.” “That’s all,” she said. “But we can still hang out and do stuff together here in school like sit together and talk about our medical condition,” I said. Ashland didn’t say anything else and I ate my food. Then her friends came and sat with us. “Oh, looks like you really got a new friend,” Amy told Ashland. “She won’t leave,” said Ashland. “How are you Natalie?” Stephanie asked. “Sad,” I said. “Oh what happened?” “My ex boyfriend hates incontinent people so he dumped me,” I said. “Ooooooooh, I am so sorry. Shitty people out there. Who was your boyfriend?” “Jason,” I said. “Does he go here?” “Yes, his mom taught English until my teacher came back and she was also my aide.” “Oh.” “Jason Larson?” Amy asked. "Yes,” I said. “Oh wow. Natalie, he did you a big favor, you don’t want to date someone who doesn’t like your underwear.” “Why are you calling it that?” I asked. “What? Underwear? Diapers are for babies.” “But that is what these are,” I pointed out. “Yes but they are called briefs.” “It’s a diaper, I just wish they would start calling them that,” I said. “Why do you want to call it something that is associated with a baby?” “Because these are what they are and diapers are not for babies, they are for people with bladder control issues and who have bowel issues too. And lazy people wear them too because they don’t want to use the toilet and don’t want to use public restrooms because they find them dirty.” “None of my friends are comfortable using the word so don’t take it personal,” said Ashland. “Diaper?” I asked. I scoffed. “They are afraid of using the word diaper?” “Face it Nat, there is still a stigma about it so lot of people are still not comfortable calling it that.” “But my whole family calls them that and so do my doctors,” I said. “That’s good. But lot of people out there are not comfortable with it so they call it briefs or pads.” “People on the incontinent forum call them diapers,” I pointed out. “Good,” Ashland said again. “But they are not lot of people.” “How often do you poop in your diapers?” I asked. Amy snorted and milk came out of her nose. “Whoa, easy on the questions,” said Stephanie. “She is so curious eh?’ said Colleen. “All she talks about is diapers, that's we don’t have anything in common,” said Ashland. “Ah she is just curious and wants to relate to someone with the same problem as her,” said Amy. “It will pass and pretty soon she will be talking about other things, right Nat?” “Yeah,” I said. “How often do you poop in them? I do it every day now about once a day, sometimes twice a day.” “Nat, Nat Nat, please?” said Colleen. “We’re eating.” “Save those questions later when we’re done,” said Stephanie. I didn’t ask anymore diaper and incontinent questions. Then when everyone was done eating, I asked Ashland again how often she pooped in hers. “Three times a day,” she said. “Whoa, how do you go that much?” I asked. “I just do.” “But how?” “I don’t know. “How often do you change your diaper?” “I go through about five changes a day, sometimes more with the ones I have on.” “I go through about five a day too,” I said. “Sometimes more when I poop. I change when I get out of bed, then I change again at eleven, then again at three, and then again at seven unless I poop. Do you do a changing schedule?” “No, I change whenever I need it.” “Do you ever get too lazy to do it?” “No, why would I? I would leak all over and stink if I were.” Then more group of girls came over and started talking. "Who's that?" One if them asked. "Oh this is Nat, she has the same problem as Ashland and her boyfriend dumped her because of it," said Amy. "It was Jason," said Ashland. "Larson?" The girl asked. "Yes," I said. "Wow, how nasty." "He dumped you because you can't control your bladder?" The other girl asked. "Duh," said Amy and Colleen. "Good thing he did so you are not with the wrong man," the other girl said again. During the whole time I was getting lot of sympathy and being told how bad Jason is and that made me feel so much better and feeling happier inside. I decided I will just keep thinking this so I will feel better and get over it soon if I keep hearing how bad he is. I told them about Jason's disdain over people having to wear diapers and how he said my mom was gross and he doesn't think he can stand to be around her because she wears them too. "Wow," they said. "That is so bigotry." "He said he didn't know when she would be pooping and peeing herself but I told him she poops in the toilet and he said that was good and said my mom does a bad job trying to re potty train herself." "What problem did she have that made her lose control of her bladder?" One of the girls asked. "She always had problems feeling when she needs to go so she always went on a potty schedule and she would sometimes have accidents if she drank too much and didn't watch her bladder," I explained. "When she is stressed out, she has more accidents so she started wearing them again." "Yeah not cool saying that about people with medical problems," said the other girl. "God he is so prejudice against people with bladder issues." "He also said he would kill himself if he didn't have control over his poop and pee," I added. "What?" Stephanie asked. "Yeah, he said if he had to wear them again, he would kill himself," I said again. "Oh my god, how did he find out you wear them? You told him?" "No he pulled my pants down in the storage room during lunch last week," I said. "Vain," said Amy. "Maybe we should warn other incontinent kids here about him," I said. "You do that and I will tell you who the other kids are tomorrow," said Ashland. I got so excited. I guess this was going to happen after all that I teach him a lesson about his incontinent bigotry. He will be known as incontinent people hater.
Lunch ended and everyone headed to class and I couldn't stop looking at Jason. This was the best school ever where no one hated incontinent people except Jason. I could form a clitch in the school where we don't allow incontinent haters. Then I would feel so much better and move on. In Geography while Mr. Al was announcing how the new quarter will be starting next week so some of our classes would be changing so this was our final week of getting all our assignments done. I kept writing on pieces of paper "Jason Larson hates people with bladder and bowel control issues" like I did last time but time I was writing it on other pieces of paper. Mrs. Robinson came over to me and told me I needed to be paying attention to the teacher and not doodling. I stopped and still did it off and on but made sure I was looking up. Then we all started working on our school work. After class ended I left some pieces of paper around but Mrs. Robinson made me pick it up. I would have to do it during lunch when she isn't around. Or maybe I will do it after school while I am volunteering. I was so glad she didn't make me show her what I was writing.
When school finally got out, I saw Jennifer again and Mom arrived. I was too shy to leave because what if Mom wanted to know where I was going and why. She would also wonder why I was leaving with paper or with my binder. I painted the set again and Mom and Jennifer interacted with each other. It felt weird because Jason hated me but our moms didn't hate each other. I chickened out leaving class and throwing paper around so I decided I would try it tomorrow. When it was time to go home, Mom and I headed home and when we got home the house was a mess from my cousins. "You guys better clean up your messes before my Dad gets back," I said. Aunt Bridgett was in the kitchen cooking and it was also a mess. "He won't be home until after seven," she said. "They do need to clean it up so they won't have to do it later," said Mom. I went around the house checking what messes they did and I started telling them to pick up their shoes, put their coats away and their backpacks, I also said "whoever left dirt on this floor, better sweep it up." I loved this job Dad had given me. He told me since I am going to be sixteen, I am big enough to watch over the house for him and making sure it stays picked up since my mom was careless to let her sister and my cousins stay without asking him first. He won't be around to make sure the house stays clean and my mom is too busy so he needs me to help him and it will be one of my chores. Since he can't pay me per mess, he will pay me by day and it will be a quarter a day so that is seven extra bucks a month. I didn't care about the cheap cost since I would be starting work after my birthday. I even got my whale whistle out of my room and started blowing it at my cousins for their messes. I blew it at Amber and said "put your coat and bag away, let's go, move move move." I blew the whistle again. "What are you? A police lady?" Amber asked. "No I am the house patrol person who is making sure the house stays neat for your Uncle Glen and this is part of my chore he gave me," I said. I felt like Ms. Hushbum but at least I wasn't yelling "Quiet, this is a library" and doing annoying things and I am not going around leaving messes and not picking up after myself. I left and blew my whistle over the dirt right by the patio door. "There is dirt right by the patio door here, clean it up." "Natalie, will you please not blow that whistle, it's giving me a headache," said Aunt Bridgett. "Clean up the kitchen," I told her. None of my cousins listened to me so I kept blowing my whistle in their ears. Timmy finally grabbed the whistle and tried to take it off me but I grabbed the string. "You have to pick up your stuff," I said. "Your dad's a loser," he said. "No one lives like this." "Everyone else has a clean house in this neighborhood," I said. "Yeah? Well no one had a clean house your daddy wants when we lived in Spokane." "They were all slobs," I said. Timmy let go of my whistle and told me if I blew it again, he is breaking it. I left the den and told Mom my cousins won't listen to me. "I will have Bridgett have her kids clean up after themselves when she is done cooking," said Mom. "But please, stop blowing that whistle, it's hard on my hearing." I went to Mom and Dad's room and watched TV. Aunt Bridgett called everyone for dinner so I went downstairs to get my food but she said these were for her kids and she bought the food and Mom still needed to feed me and my brother and sister. I felt disappointed and embarrassed. I thought she was cooking for all of us. All my cousins came to the table and they got their food and ate. "Time to clean the kitchen" I said. "Natalie, I will after I am done eating." Mom was starting to make us some food now. She cooked us up some quesadillas with cheese. My cousins and my aunt were all finished eating by the time Mom had to leave to go get Dad and she asked Aunt Bridgett to take the quesadillas out of the oven when the timer goes off. Aunt Bridgett forgot to remind her kids to clean up so I told her she needed to make her kids clean up their messes before Dad gets back. "Timmy, Jaymee, Jesse, Amber, put your shoes and jacket and bags away and let's clean up what we made," Aunt Bridgett called. All her kids put their stuff away and she made them sweep up the dirt they tracked in. The kids were still cleaning by the time Dad got back. "Oh good they're cleaning," he said. "But I want the whole house to be picked up when I get home, not have it being in the process of being cleaned." "I tried to make them clean it up but they wouldn't listen," I said. "Timmy even tried to take my whistle." "Were you blowing it?" Dad asked. "Yes," I said. "That's why." "But they had messes to clean up," I said. "That doesn't mean you need to blow your whistle." Mom got out some plates and had us put quesadillas on our plate. "How many can we take?" Kelly asked. Mom counted and said we each get two. "That isn't even enough," Kelly cried. "At least you will have less calories," I told her. Kelly nudged me arm in my upper left arm with her fist. It hurt so bad I pushed her when I reacted to the pain. “Hey,” said Mom. “She called me fat,” said Kelly. “No, I said that would be less calories for you,” I corrected. “Same thing.” “You’re so dumb because of your blonde hair you thought you heard me saying you were fat.” “Natalie, it was implied,” said Dad. “I said it was less calories for her,” I said. “And why did you tell her that?” Dad asked. “Because she could use less calories to burn some body fat.” “Why?” Dad asked again. “Because she is chubby and not skinny anymore.” “And it was implied when you said it. She knew why you said it so that is why she got upset with you. You don’t need to say it to mean it, we all know you so we know what you were thinking. I am sure Mum knew too, did you?” Dad asked her. “Yes, I know she was trying to reassure her,” said Mom. “I am getting so sick of her making comments about my weight,” said Kelly. “Natalie, you need to stop making comments about peoples sizes and mentioning calories or what they are eating or not eating,” said Dad. "I'm just trying to help," I said. "Well you need to stop trying to help," Dad said again. "If they want your help, they will ask for it. Kelly will say "Natalie, I want to lose weight, do you have any tips, can you help me and let me know when I am screwing up?" Just because you like having less calories and you care about your weight doesn't mean others feel the same way about theirs." We went to eating while my cousins played and Aunt Bridgett looked at the paper. I was still hungry but I didn't complain. Less calories meant more body fat to burn when I run out of calories. I took my early shower because I needed to change my diaper and I found some new bruises on my body again. I couldn't remember bumping those spots on anything. I also looked at my body to see where I needed to burn more fat at. I still needed to make my butt and thighs smaller. I will burn away this body fat and my belly too. I still looked the same. I still needed to lose weight despite seeing some bones on my chest and tummy area where my rib cage is and my spinal bone sticking out so it looked like I had tiny humps. But I still had that tiny folded skin part where my rib cage ends at the bottom on my back. Then when I stretch sideways, that folded skin is gone where I am stretching but the other side has more folded skin. I started peeing again. I stood still until it finished and used dirty towels to wipe it up and I got in the shower.
The next day I still couldn't spread my papers around because Mrs. Robinson met me at the door and she followed me in the hallway as always. I never got the chance at all till lunch but first I met with Ashland again and I asked her who the other kids are that are incontinent. "If I tell you, will you then stop coming to this table and following me and my friends?" she asked. "Yes," I said. "Okay one of them in is sixth grade and his name is Zac, I don't know why he wears them and I don't know his last name. The other one is in his Junior year and his name is Daron and let's see where he is." Ashland started looking for him. "Do you know his last name?" I asked. I had to be sure if I knew him. "Pasqual, I am not sure how to say it," she said. She kept looking. Then I said, "Can you tell me the others?" "The last one is Rosa and she has a small bladder, she is in ninth grade, she is sitting over there," Ashland pointed. I looked and I saw a group of girls sitting together eating. "Which one is it?" I asked. "She has on a pink jacket and has her hair down and it's brown," said Ashland. I looked for that description and she looked normal to me and I tried to see her bottom. "Oh there is Daron waiting in line for his lunch, he is standing right behind Lura." I looked for Lura and saw her and behind her stood Daron and I recognized him. I was surprised. If I didn't notice all these kids wore diapers, I bet others hadn't noticed mine either. "Do any of them get changed by their nurses?" I asked. "Not me," said Ashland. "Ask them." "How do you handle your messy accidents in class?" I asked. "I tell the teacher and I leave to go clean up." "But aren't you scared anyone is going to notice the smell?" I asked. "People will just think someone farted. No one is going to assume you have a diaper on and if it happens in public, people will just look for a young child and think they did it." That reminded me of the time when I was in a gaming store with Kelly at a mall in Portland. I pooped and some mother who was there with her young son who looked to be about four started scolding him for pooping in his pants. She grabbed him and got in his face and said, “did you poop your pants?” The little boy said “no” and the mother kept asking him if he pooped and he kept saying “no.” Then she pulled him out if the store yelling at him for pooping his pants while he was crying. I was thirteen and I was stuck in that diaper because my mom had my diaper bag and she wasn’t with us. I couldn’t imagine the mother's reaction when she saw he didn’t poop his pants so I imagined how much she apologized to him for blaming him and not believing him. My mom thinks he probably had a habit of pooping himself and lying about it so he cried wolf. “Whenever I pooped in class, kids always knew it was me and they would even blame someone’s fart smell on me or anything that smelled bad,” I said. “Did they know you wore diapers?” Ashland asked. “Yes,” I said. “But don’t kids know here you wear them so wouldn’t they think you pooped?” I asked. “This is Rosa Parks, kids here are too retarded to figure it out.” “Oh, lot of kids in this school are retarded? How so? What do they do that makes them retarded?” I asked. “It was a figure of speech. I just mean they can’t make the connection because their real mom’s either smoked crack or did street drugs or got hit in the head or have cognitive deficits. There are Lot of stupid kids here. You're one of them?” “Excuse me? What?” “You ask lot of questions and say things you shouldn’t even be saying and you can't take the hint.” “What do you mean?” I asked. “See? You asked and you didn’t understand. You also don’t seem to understand there are different perspectives.” “I don’t understand,” I said. “Yeah, you don’t and that is why we don’t have anything in common and then you insist we can still be friends because we both have to wear diapers and you can’t seem to understand that.” “Understand what? That we wear diapers?” “No, that we don’t have anything in common and you think we still have something in common because of diapers.” I kept looking at Daron and Lura and at the girl wearing a pink coat. “You also can’t even have a normal conversation,” Ashland added. "We're having one now," I said. "This is not even a conversation, all you're doing is asking questions." Then her friends arrived. Ashland waved at me, "remember our deal, I tell you, you stop following us." I took her waving her hand at me as a sign she wanted me to leave the table, that hand waving people do when they tell you to go. I left the table and there was no room to sit at the table the pink jacket girl was sitting at. Daron was still in line and I stood in the cafeteria holding my food. I felt like Dawn Weiner. The only table I saw was an empty one Jason sat at. I felt nervous to sit there but I really wanted to eat so I sat at the far end as possible. Jason scooted further to the edge. He really hated me. I finished my food and I decided I had some business to do since Mrs. Robinson wasn't around. I dumped my tray and handed my silverware and tray to the kitchen lady and went to my locker. I got my papers out I wrote on and started to drop the pieces of paper around the hallway. I was hoping kids would read the notes and Jason's life would change here. I felt so much better and I fantasized his life being different here. If everyone lets him know how wrong he is to think of incontinent people as disgusting, he will change his mind and not be bigoted. I went to Mr. Brooks and got on the computer in his class. He and few other teachers were in there eating and they were talking. I got on the internet and read the incontinent board again. I posted about being dumped by my boyfriend and asked if others have been dumped for their medical problem. I already knew some had because I have seen people saying their best friend left them because they couldn't handle it or the woman never answered their phone again, but I wanted to see if anyone has actually lost their spouse or boyfriend or girlfriend because of their diapers or if because they became incontinent.
Soon the bell rang and I got off the internet and grabbed my binder and went to PE. I put my binder in my locker and went to the gym. Things still went normal for Jason. What was wrong with the kids here? Did they not care if someone hated incontinent people? Mrs. Jenkins did roll call and then she told us what we were going to be playing today. We were going to be playing floor hockey. Then she got us into two groups and I was against Jason. I played till one and then I had to go to my therapy class. Things still went normal for him in there. I stated to feel upset again and I felt no one here cared about incontinent people and how can they not care if someone wears diapers but yet not care someone hates incontinent people? Jason and I did not sit together and I sat next to Kady instead. Oden sat in a chair next to me. I thought about leaving a piece of paper in this class on Thursday hoping another kid will see it and get curious and read it. We did our session and I couldn't stop thinking about everyone here not caring about me. If they cared, they would all stick up for me and hate Jason for what he did. I couldn't even talk about my issue here because I just knew everyone would tell me how much they don't care about my feelings and if Jason hates incontinent people. I decided I would try and handle this myself. In Geography I wrote in big words on my college ruled paper "Jason Larson hates incontinent people and thinks they are disgusting and said someone with it was gross and dumped his girlfriend over her medical problem and said he would kill himself if he ended up with the same problem." I felt better again and decided I would tape it to his locker. I couldn't make copies of this because we didn't have a copier machine and I couldn't use the school’s because you need the staff's permission and they would want to know what I am copying. I could go home and type this on the computer and print off the papers and I could do it in Kelly's room. I liked that idea. I would tape them all over the school during lunch to punish him.
Things went normal for Jason still for the rest of the day and Bridgett was making dinner again for her kids when Mom and I got back after five. I went in Kelly's room while my cousins ate and Kelly was doing her homework. She let me use the computer and I stayed quiet. I opened Word Pad and started to type and then I enlarged it and kept it on one page. I selected print and decided to copy off twenty pages. "What are you printing?" Kelly asked. "Just something for school," I said. "Oh homework." I didn't say anything. The pages printed off and then the words got lighter and lighter and then the window popped up saying "Out of ink." Darn, oh well at least I will take what I have. I counted the pages and I only got twelve. I put the other blank pages back. I clicked out of Word Pad and kept the papers with me and I started to look on the incontinent forum and I got some responses. The responses made me feel better and it was a shame there was still a stigma on incontinence but they told me those people were not worth my time and I wouldn't want to be with them anyway if they didn't like it. I would have just been miserable and I want someone who accepts it and isn't bothered by it and just imagine if we were at a concert and I needed a clean diaper, would I want the guy to get mad at me for needing to leave to go change or what if I soiled myself, would I want him to berate me and yell at me for the smell? I wouldn't want a man getting mad at me for my accidents and for having them at inconvenient times for him and if he is going to be embarrassed by it. I imagined that being Jason and realized that was how he would have treated me. He really was a bigot. I read the Bravenet board again and read more diaper stories and then I did the Daily Jigsaw. Amber came back in the bedroom. "I need to use the computer Natalie for homework." "Can you use the one downstairs?" I asked. "Your mom says I need to use this one." I got off and I grabbed my papers and put them in my backpack. I also looked for the scotch tape and took it out of the drawer and brought it up to my room and stuck it in my backpack. Mom got Dad and brought him home and we all ate while Aunt Bridgett made her kids clean up after themselves. "They really need to clean before I get home," said Dad. "Glen, we are not going to make this place look like a palace," said Mom. "How hard is it to put your shoes away when you take them off and hanging up your coats and putting your cup in the sink or dishwasher and wiping up water spots you leave?" Dad asked. "I am not going to keep nagging my sister to keep this place looking like a palace," said Mom. "They are cleaning now aren’t they?" He finished eating and he checked out the whole house to be sure it stayed clean. "Who didn’t flush the toilet?" he shouted from upstairs. Mom put her hand on her forehead and rested it. "Hey, who got the mirrors all dirty?" Dad shouted again. Dad then came downstairs and started picking up stuff that was out of place. "Hey that's my stuff," said Aunt Bridgett. "Anything I see lying out goes in the trash," said Dad. "My house, you keep this place clean and it better be that way when I get home or I am tossing stuff out that doesn't belong." "Your husband is crazy," Aunt Bridgett told Mom. "It's not hard keeping this place neat," said Mom. "See this as a learning opportunity." "Hey give it to me and I will put it away," said Aunt Bridgett to Dad. "Glen just give it to her, I think she learned her lesson," said Mom. Dad put the stuff down and Aunt Bridgett picked it up and put it with her stuff. "This place is mess," said Dad. "Bridgett is only keeping her stuff on one side of the family room," said Mom. "There is too much stuff in this house, hurry up and get a job," Dad told Aunt Bridgett. "I've been applying and I am waiting for calls now," she said. Jaymee was sitting in the family room sorting out her Valentine's she got from school. I saw what kinds she got. I looked at the cards to see who they were from. "I was the only one in class who didn't have cards so I gave out candy instead," she said. "Why didn’t you have cards?" I asked. "We moved and I didn't know who was in my class but everyone had extra cards for me." "You and my brother aren't in the same class?" I asked. "Nope, he is next door to me." "Do other kids know you are both cousins?" I asked. "Yep." "Aunt Anita, Uncle Glen, I need more ink for the printer," Amber called. "We would have to go to the store and buy more," said Dad. "When's it due?" Mom asked. "Tomorrow." "We need to go to the store," said Aunt Bridgett. "I can't drive," said Dad. "Fred Meyer sells them, you got money?" Mom asked. "I have some left over," said Aunt Bridgett. "I think I have some here," said Mom. She opened her computer drawer and took out an envelope and took out a couple cash. "This is for the ink," she handed her sister the cash. "You need to get the right kind, let me get it out of the printer," said Dad. He went upstairs and brought the ink cartridge down and gave it to Aunt Bridgett. "Show them this and they will show you the type you need." "I'm not dumb," said Aunt Bridgett. She got her shoes on and left in her POS car. Dad then came in the family room and said, “This better be picked up or I am tossing it in the trash if you leave it here,” he told Jaymee. I got finished looking at her cards and I went to my room. Dad was in the kids bathroom cleaning. I took off my pants and kicked them aside. I went to my dresser to get the wipes and rash cream when I saw a pack of Sweethearts. I picked them up and turned it over and it said, “To Natalie From Mom.” She gave me a valentine’s gift and didn’t tell me. Maybe she wanted it to be a surprise. I looked at the calories and it said 110 for one box. I decided to have very little. I had five hearts and that was good enough. I took my diaper off and wiped my bottom and put rash cream on. Then I picked up my clean diaper and put it on. I didn’t have any accidents this time. I got off the floor and took my shirt off and got my pajamas on. I threw my wet diaper away and put my backpack next to my dresser. Aunt Bridgett soon came home with the ink cartridge. Mom came upstairs and she put it in the printer and Amber printed off her homework.
I left my bedroom and found Dad cleaning the master bathroom. “Dad.” “Yes?” he said. “Do I really not have any normal conversations?” I asked. “Of course you do. You have them all the time. Why do you ask?” “A girl in my school told me I didn’t even know how to have one and I told her I was having one with her now and she said I was only asking questions.” “How long have you known her?” “Since Friday,” I said. “That’s why, she doesn’t know you,” said Dad. “But once she knows you more and more, she will see you can have a normal conversation.” “That won’t be possible because she doesn’t even want to be my friend and doesn’t want me around,” I said. “Her loss. Not everyone is going to like you and this happens to everyone.” “Have people ever not liked you?” “Of course, it happens all the time but that is part of life.” “How come I don’t see it happening to everyone at my school?” “Because you’re not living their life. You are only living yours so you see everything that happens and you can’t see what happens to them because you’re not living it.” I started to wonder how many times other normal kids at my old high school have been disliked by other kids and how often Veronica was disliked by other kids. I wonder how many nice people out there are often disliked by others. I went back to my room.

Chapter 8
I went to school the next day with the papers. I waited till lunch to tape them on walls. I went to my locker and got them out and the scotch tape and started taping them all over. I picked spots where I think most kids would notice. I had to spread them out because I only had 12 copies. I put one of them right by the front doors on the display case where everyone will see it when they walk in the building or out. I felt like Harriet the Spy except I didn’t have a picture and I wasn’t taping a bunch of them up in rows.
After I got done, I went to Mr. Brooks and got on the computer. I felt so much better again. Now hopefully Jason will get punished this time.
When the bell rang, I got off the internet and went to my next class. I waited for the fun to start. But kids didn’t say anything and instead Jason came over to me holding crumpled paper frowning at me. He tossed it at me and pushed me. “Bitch,” he said angrily. “Bigot,” I shouted as I pushed him back. We started fighting. Kids started to chant “fight fight fight.” Jason was trying to hit me but I was grabbing his hands and pushing them away. “Think you can hit a girl huh?” I shouted. “How does it feel trying to hit one but she is restraining you?” Mrs. Jenkins, Mrs. Robinson, and Mrs. Zolt all rushed over to us and broke us up. “Hey, enough. What is this about?” Mrs. Jenkins asked. “She wrote nasty stuff about me and put it up in the hall,” said Jason. “He hates incontinent people and said my mom is disgusting and would kill himself if he had the same problem as her,” I said. “He even pulled down my pants last week.” “Okay, you two need to go to the office, the rest of you, warm up while I take these two in,” she ordered. “We’ll take them,” said Mrs. Zolt. “Jason, pick up the trash,” Mrs. Jenkins ordered. He picked up the big ball of crumbled paper and we were both taken to the office, I noticed my signs had been ripped off the wall. I wondered now if his life has now changed that I said it in front of everyone what he said about my mother and how he hates incontinent people. We were taken to the office and Mrs. Robinson told Mrs. Peggy what happened. “These two had a disagreement and were doing fist fighting,” she explained. Mrs. Peggy looked at us. “You two come,” said Mrs. Peggy. We followed her into a small office leaving our aides behind and she closed the door and told us to have a seat. I sat while Jason picked up the other chair. “Sit,” she said. Jason put the chair down and sat. “Now what happened, I will start with you first,” she said to me. “I put up signs around the school informing everyone that he hates incontinent people and thinks my mom is gross because of it and said he would kill himself if he had the same problem and he also dumped a girl over it too.” “That was very uncalled for,” said Mrs. Peggy. “But he is a bigot,” I said. “That is your opinion but you didn’t need to put signs up about it. We do not tolerate harassment in this school. Jason, now you.” “She put up signs all over the school and I ripped them off the wall I could find,” he said holding up the crumpled ball of paper. “Bring it here,” said Mrs. Peggy. Jason handed it to her and she uncrumpled it and it was more than one page. I counted half of them. Mrs. Peggy read it and said “Natalie, this is not okay. Now will you two tell me what this is all about?” “He dumped me because I have to wear diapers and he tricked me going in a closet with him here just to pull down my pants and he has avoided me ever since and it hurts.” “Jason, that was also very uncalled for and Natalie, I know break ups hurt.” “He dumped me over my medical problem and you see nothing wrong with that?” I asked. “Do you hate incontinent people too, I want out of this school if everyone hates me for it.” “No one hates you for it, lot of people just don’t care about these things,” said Mrs. Peggy. “They don’t care if someone hates someone over their medical problem?” I asked. “That is the way people are,” said Mrs. Peggy. “Now back me up here, how did this all start, Jason?” He told her his side and then it was my turn. I told her about when we were at my house and when our moms were downstairs visiting and how he was snooping in my room and looked in the trash in my parents bathroom and saying how he doesn’t think he could be around my mother because she could be pooping and peeing her pants. He also told me he would kill himself if he had to wear them. “Natalie, he is entitled to his feelings,” said Mrs. Peggy. “What if he said that about disabilities or black people?” I said. “They are still his feelings and everyone is entitled to them, now has he been harassing you about your problem?” “He’s been ignoring me,” I said. “But has he been spreading rumors about you and making fun of you and teasing you about your problem?” “No,” I said. “Okay, he has not harassed you then and you are the one who has been.” “I’m just defending myself,” I said. “This is not self-defense, this is straight out bullying. He has not done anything to you and you are the only one who has done something to him. He pulled down your pants and that was uncalled for. Where did you do it at Jason?” “The janitor closet,” he said. “You didn’t do it in front of everyone else?” “No.” “It was just the both of you alone?” “Yes.” “Why did you do it?” “To see if she wears them and I was right.” “You know that is very inappropriate. You had no right to do that so she has every right to be upset with you about it and Natalie, you have no right to putting these up so he has every right to be upset with you about it,” she said shaking the crumbled papers at me. Mrs. Peggy opened the door and told Mrs. Zolt he could take Jason back to his class. She then told Mrs. Robinson to come to the office. Mrs. Robinson came in and Mrs. Peggy told her about my signs. “I saw that,” she said. “I think I am going to give her detention again for this,” said Mrs. Peggy, “Hey what about Jason, he pulled down my pants,” I said. “He was wrong but you took things further,” said Mrs. Peggy. “Natalie has been very upset lately about him not speaking to her and not sitting with her in class,” said Mrs. Robinson. “I did see her writing in class the other day and ripping it up and I found it on the floor talking about the same thing she put up in the hallway.” I was shocked she knew and I wonder if she threw it away when it fell on the floor so no other kids got the chance to see it. They talked and then Mrs. Robinson decided she better be in the lunch room with me since I can’t be by myself because of how I am handing things. Mrs. Peggy decided on giving me detention and said she would call my parents to discuss this. Then she sent me back to class. It was therapy time by the time I was sent back so I went straight to therapy. Jason was already in there. Mrs. Robinson sat in the room with me but she sat in a chair in the back. * * *
Mom knew about the incident when she got to school. Mrs. Peggy had called Dad at work and told him and he called her and told her so Mom was asking me about it. “Natalie, you father called me telling me you put signs up about Jason all over the school, what did you write on it?” “That he hates incontinent people and that he would kill himself if he had that problem and he said you were disgusting for having to wear them,” I replied. “I also wrote he dumped someone because of it.” “Natalie,” said Mom. Jennifer came over to my mother and she had an angry look on her face. “Do you know what your daughter has done to my child in this school?” she said angrily. “Yes, she told me she put up signs about him,” Mom replied. “Your daughter is bullying my child,” Jennifer yelled. “Teach your son to not hate incontinent people,” I said. “Natalie, please,” said Mom. “Jason hates incontinent people everyone,” I shouted in class. “He thinks they’re all disgusting.” “Tell your daughter now to stop this,” Jennifer ordered Mom. “Natalie, that is enough,” said Mom. “That’s all you’re doing?” Jennifer shouted. “You’re just going to tell her to stop and not do anything else? No wonder she is this way.” Mom grabbed Jennifer and Jennifer grabbed her back. Kids in class jumped and backed away. Mom and Jennifer were grabbing each other and Mrs. Giland just stood there not doing anything. She was flinching instead and had her hand up to her face. Jason and I just stood there watching our Moms grabbing each other and Mom pulling Jennifer’s hair and her grabbing Mom’s arms and trying to push her away. Luckily other parents were here so they grabbed at my mother. Jason just looked at me and walked away. He came to his mother. Mom was still trying to break free but the parents had a hold of her arms. “Let’s go home,” said Jennifer to Jason. They left the class and Mrs. Giland kept the students at one end of the room. Mom calmed down and she was still upset. I saw her medical alert bracelet being looked at and one parents took out her cell phone and called the number. “Is Glen there,” the mom asked. “Oh Bridgett, yeah your sister got into a fight here with another parent. Oh, okay. No the other mom left with her son. Yes she is still very upset. She attacked another mom.” Mrs. Giland came over to me and told me it would be best if I left with my mother and that she can’t come here anymore and she thought she was going to have to call the police when that fight broke out. I went over to Mom. “Mom, let’s head home,” I said. “Mrs. Giland thinks we should leave and she doesn’t want you back.” “You’re sure you want to leave?” Mom asked. “Yes, I don’t mind going home.” “But who will paint the set?” “I am sure someone else will,” I said. We both left. “Mom, why did you do that?” I asked. “I didn’t mean to,” she said. “How can you not mean to?” I was having a hard time believing it, how can you not mean to grab someone? “My body just did it on its own. It happens with your father too and he knows how to restrain me and will hold me until it stops.” We got in the car and left. “What is going on in school between you and Jason?” Mom asked. “He won’t talk to me and he acts like I don’t exist and when I sat at the table with him, he scooted to the edge as closely as he could and it made me upset.” “Is that it?” “Yes.” “What have you been doing to him?” “I started writing notes about him hating incontinent people and how he feels about them and I started leaving them all over the school and when that didn’t work, I decided to make signs about it and tape them on the walls.” “Natalie. What were you thinking?” “I just wanted to teach him a lesson, punish him so he wouldn’t hate incontinent people anymore and think they are disgusting.” “And it backfired because now Jennifer is mad at me and I don’t know what she expected me to do. Just please leave Jason alone and don’t do anything to him please?” “Fine,” I said. I was still mad at Jason. I still wanted to punish him and find other ways.
We arrived home and things were out of place again. I saw some dirty dishes had been left on the kitchen counter and were not in the sink and I saw a knife out on the counter and a jar of peanut butter. Mom put some of it away. Aunt Bridgett was cooking something in the oven for her kids and she said to me, “Natalie, guess what? I got a job.” “Really?” I said. ‘Where at?” “They called me today and they interviewed me and they told me I will start tomorrow. I am going to be a caregiver assistant in the home for the elderly and they are going to be paying me fifteen dollars an hour." “I bet Dad will be so happy,” I said. “Oh he will and I bet he will calm down and things will be better around here. And the good thing about this job is the hours are very flexible so that allows me to get my kids up for school and then go to work and come home and still cook and feed them and your Dad won’t have to worry about me being here all day.” “That’s great Bridgett,” said Mom. “And then you can start saving to move out,” I said. “My son is wanting to apply for a job at the burger joint so I am going to be picking him up,” said Aunt Bridgett. “It can’t take him that long to do it, what has he been doing all this time?” Mom asked. “Oh no, he is going to do it soon, I didn’t mean he was doing it now. He is going to be going there after school to apply and I am picking him up,” said Aunt Bridgett. I felt so happy. Pretty soon Aunt Bridgett will be moving out once she has saved enough and then we would have the whole house again to ourselves and Dad would be so happy and no more him yelling at them and hearing him being upset about the house being messy.
That evening was hard again because when Dad came home, he was stressed out again about the house not being clean enough and Aunt Bridgett and her kids were still not following his rules. It was like we had a bunch of Matthews in the house and it was too much for Dad to handle and me going around patrolling the house wasn’t working because they were not listening to me and Aunt Bridgett would tell me she would do it later and it doesn’t need to be done right now. Amber couldn’t take it anymore so she called Grandma Del and told her what was going on and surprisingly she decided to come here to help out since she was semi-retired. Amber told us the news that Grandma was coming out because she had called her and she will be coming out tomorrow. “How are we going to fit another person in this house?” I asked. “Where will she sleep.” “Silly, she said she will be coming here in her RV,” said Amber. “And she will have her own food hopefully,” I added. “It has a fridge.” “I just hope she knows to bring her own food and buy it,” I said. “I told her everything how crazy your dad is so she said she will be coming out tomorrow and help out and she wants to bring you a surprise for your sweet sixteen.” “I wonder what it is,” I said. “She wouldn’t tell me but she wants it to be a surprise.” I started to feel anxious. I wonder what the surprise was. “Do Aunt Anita and Uncle Glen and Mom know she is coming?” Jaymee asked. “No,” said Amber. I wonder if things could get even crazier. Yes that was sarcasm.
Mom got me up the next day for school and Bridgett was up too. She said my mom offered to get Jaymee up for school and get her to the bus stop so she will be leaving here shortly. Bridgett made herself coffee and she left coffee spills. “You forgot to clean up the spills,” I said. “I will get it Natalie,” she said. She sat down and read the paper and took a sip of her coffee and she never wiped up those spills because they were still there when I left for school. I figured Mom will clean them up when she sees them. I didn’t bother Jason that day and I kept my jacket on because I was cold and I decided to meet up with Daron or Rosa during lunch. Maybe they will talk to me and want to be my friend and I would have an incontinent buddy. I felt nervous but I had to get over it or else I will never meet people and make friends. I found Rosa and sat with her. “Hi,” I said. She didn’t say anything. “I’m Natalie and I know you’re Rosa. I also know you are incontinent like me so I am looking for incontinent buddies.” “I don’t need incontinent buddies,” she said. “I do,” I said. “I want to meet others like me and be friends with them so I don’t feel alone. I tried to be friends with Ashland but she doesn’t want me. I hope you will want me.” Kids sitting with her all giggled. I wondered what was so funny. “How long have you been incontinent for?” There was more laughter. Rosa just looked down and smiled. “I have been incontinent since I was seven,” I said. “What about you? What caused it? Mine was caused from being in a car accident from a drunk driver hitting us, what about you?” “What is she talking about?” one of the girls asked her. “I have no idea,” said Rosa. “You’re incontinent too aren’t you?” I asked. “Ashland told me you were and pointed you to me at the table. Was she mistaking? Ashland told me no one here cares that we wear.” “You have the right person,” said one of the kids at the table. “Good, I thought at first Ashland was mistaking but I am glad I was not. So how long have you been incontinent?” I asked Rosa. “Why do you want to know?” she asked. “Because I’m curious and I just want to talk to people like me and talk about our experience with it,” I replied. I waited for her answer but she forgot to answer it. “How long have you been incontinent?” I asked again. “You don’t need to know.” “Why?” I asked. “Why’s it your business?” Rosa asked. “Because I’m curious and want to talk to someone about it to and share the experience with me. You know Jason Larson, he dumped me over my medical condition, have you ever been dumped by anyone over your medical problem? What’s wrong with you?” “She doesn’t like to talk about her problem,” said one of the girls. I decided I would just talk about mine to her and maybe she will get comfortable and start sharing hers with me. “It took me a while to used to peeing in them and pooping,” I began but everyone at the table got up and moved away. “Where are you going?” I asked. “Was it something I said?” The girls including Rosa moved to another table. I wondered if I should follow them. I got up too and went to the table and sat. “Why’d you guys move?” I asked. “You say weird things,” said one of the girls. “What weird things?” I saw weird looks on their faces. “So any way it took me a while to get used to wearing them and my best friend dumped me over it,” I continued. “We are moving to another table again and this time please don’t follow us,” one of the other girls said. They all got up and moved to a different table again. Why were kids here being so unfriendly to me? Even I can’t seem to make friends with other incontinent kids. Just as I knew, I have the invisible words “different” written all over me because kids always treat me different no matter where I go. I saw Daron in line and decided I will try talking to him when he sits down. I ate my food and waited for him to get his food. He got closer and closer to the tiny desk with the computer and all the kids were punching in their number as they were passing by. Then he was next and he put in his number and got his food. I watched him get his milk and fork and spoon and he sat down. I got up and moved over to him. “Hi, I’m Natalie,” I said. “Hi,” he said. “Ashland told me about you so I know you have the same medical problem as me down there,” I pointed. "How long have you had it?” “My whole life.” “Have you ever been dumped by anyone because of it?” I asked. “Yes.” “Ever been dumped by a girlfriend?” “I never had one yet.” “Ever been teased about your diapers?” “Don’t say that out loud.” “No one will make fun of you about it, Ashland told me no one here cares that we wear them,” I reassured him. “I don’t want that word being said out loud here,” he said. “How did you get incontinent?” “Shh, don’t talk about that here either.” “Why?” I asked. “Because it’s embarrassing.” “What? How can it be embarrassing, you have had it your whole life and I have only had it for eight years and I am used to it it’s not embarrassing anymore. Does anyone here know you wear them?” “That’s the thing, no one knows yet and you are making it out to be public here.” “How do you hide the smell when you poop?” I tried to ask quietly. “I don’t, I do it in the restroom.” “Wow,” I said. “So is it only urinary?” “Yeah. I can’t make it most of the time.” “Are you friends with Ashland and Rosa or with that other kid who has the same problem as us?” I asked. “No.” “Why not?” He shrugged. “Do you have a girlfriend?” “No.” “Would you want one?” “Maybe.” “What if I asked you?” “I don’t know you.” “You will now,” I smiled. “I don’t want a girlfriend right now,” Daron said. “Why not?” I asked. “I am not interested in dating right now.” “Okay, we can be friends then,” I suggested. “Kids here will just think we’re dating.” “So, is that a problem?” I asked. Daron didn’t answer. I had to reassure him we could still be friends and it wouldn’t matter if kids thought we were dating. “Is it because I am too weird for you?” I asked. “Kids here have told me so far I am weird and say weird things. Do you think I am weird?” “Isn’t everyone weird?” Now this time I didn’t know how to answer. “Does the nurse change you or do you do it yourself?" I asked. “I,” he said. “Do you wish you could use the toilet like everyone else?” I asked quietly. “I already do.” “I don’t, I have no control and I never try and make it because I know I won’t. I can’t feel anything when I go but I feel a little bit of pressure when my BM is coming out and I can feel my diaper getting warm when I pee. Did you know Jason Larson dumped me over my medical problem and told me incontinent people are disgusting and that he would kill himself if he had to wear them." "Some people suck," said Daron. "We should tell everyone how much Jason hates incontinent people and thinks they are all gross," I said. "I don't do gossip." "It will be teaching him a lesson. Do you wish you didn't have to wear them?" "Yes." "Me too," I said. "Do you ever leak at night?" "Sometimes." "I wear plastic pants over mine, do you?" "I use boosters." "Have you ever tried cloth?" "No." "You should, it's very comfortable and they never leak at night. Do you wear thick diapers or thin ones?" "Thin." "I wear thick, why thin?" "More discreet." "But don't you leak?" "I change after each accident." "That sounds like a waste, that must be a lot you go through a day?" "Not really, I go like everyone else but I just can't hold it when I have to go and it's pretty much saturated when I go." "If you wear thicker ones, you wouldn't have to change as much." "No offense but staying in the same one seems gross." "Why?" I asked. "Because you're sitting in your waste and you get sores that way." "I don't get sore, I use rash cream." "I don't like being in a wet one." "Why not?" "Too uncomfortable." "If you wear better ones, it won't feel bad. I just wish they would make ones out there that would hold a lot so it will last all day and I wouldn't have to worry about finding a restroom." "No thanks, I prefer to stay dry." “But isn’t it hard finding a restroom when you are out in public?” “Sometimes but then I don’t have to go for a while after I went.” "When did you start to change your own?" "When I was about nine." "Whoa that's young. How often do you change during the day?" "Whenever I pee." "But how many times a day do you go?" "Maybe three or four, it depends how much I drink." "What kinds do you wear?" "Depends." "Those suck and they always leaked on me," I said. I sat with him for the rest of lunch and then he was done eating and I followed him as he dumped his tray. "Do you like video games?" I asked. "Are you hitting on me?" He asked. "No I am just asking you questions," I said. "I told you, I am not looking for a girlfriend." "I know, I just want to be friends, do you play video games?" I asked again. "Yes and no offense but I don't want any friends that are girls." "Aw, why not?" I said. "I already told you, kids here will think we're dating." "Why is that bad?" "I don't want them to think that." "But why? It's normal to have a girlfriend at your age, why don't you want anyone thinking it?" "Because I want everyone to know I am single." "You don't want them to think you're normal?" I asked. "What's that?" "It means not being different." "What? How does that work, I thought everyone is different?" "It means not being like everyone else," I explained. “What is that supposed to mean?” “Being different than everyone,” I explained. “You are not like the others.” "What, this makes zero sense,” said Daron. "I think it makes perfect sense,” I said. “No one is like the others, everyone is different. There is no such thing as being normal, everyone’s got something wrong with them.” “If they did I would see it,” I said. “Can people tell when they look at you?” “Yes,” I said. “Even though I look like everyone else, people still seem to be able to tell I am not like the others because of how they treat me. I can tell who is different even if they look normal. Have your diapers ever been stolen here?” “I told you to not talk about it in here around other kids,” Daron scolded. “Sorry.” I waited for us to leave the cafeteria. He walked away and I followed him. “Why are you following me? I told you I do not want any friends who are girls,” he said. “I just wanted to ask you something,” I said. “What?” “I am waiting until we are away from the other kids.” “No they haven’t and if they have I didn’t notice.” “Did you ever notice anyone else wearing diapers in this school besides the ones you know?” “Not that I know of.” “Did you notice me wearing them too?” “No.” Daron kept walking away and I kept following him. “Why are you following me?” “I don’t know,” I said. “Please don’t. I don’t know how else to say no to you I am not looking for any female friends.” I walked away saying "okay." “Thank you,” said Daron. I saw Mrs. Robinson waiting for me. All the incontinent kids here have rejected me and the only one left was Zac but he was in none of my classes.
Mrs. Robinson stuck close to me for the rest of the day so I was not able to do anything. I bet I wouldn’t be able to go to one of the teacher’s classrooms and look for Jason’s paper and write something bad on it because she would be there and follow me. I also saw Dr. Harding again and he knew about the signs incident and talked to me about it. "I heard you put signs up about Jason," said Dr. Harding. "Can you tell me what that was about?" "I am punishing him for being bigoted against incontinent people so he will stop being that way," I explained. "Do you think that is going to work?" "Only way it won't is if he is too dumb because of him being a blonde." "I was given a copy of one of your signs and remember what I told you Natalie, he can sue you for slander?" he said. "I spoke the truth, he really did say those things and he really did dump me over my medical condition," I said. "Do you have proof? Can you proof he said those things? Is it recorded?" He asked. "No," I said. "It's your word against his. Natalie, this behavior isn’t healthy. Sometimes when someone gets very hurt feelings, they don't handle their emotions well so they do inappropriate things to their ex's. People have even destroyed their ex's property and went to jail for it. You do not want to head that direction. You're heading for destruction here if you keep this up." "I just want to punish him," I said. "That is what those other ex's believe they are doing too, punishing their ex's but all they are doing is destroying property or doing slander and you know what happens, it says more about them than about their ex because then people are going to think how dysfunctional they are and think that was why their ex had broken up with them in the first place. That is what you are telling people through your actions. They are not going to see Jason hating incontinent people and thinking low of them, they are going to see you and think you're crazy and think good he broke up with you." "So they are just going to ignore the fact he hates incontinent people?" I asked. "People just focus on the negative and that is how humans are, negative behavior stands out more and people just focus on that." "Wow, I didn't realize lot of people had blonde hair and they all were born with the wrong hair color," I said sarcastically. Dr. Harding laughed. "Isn’t it negative to hate incontinent people?" I asked. "First of all, that is your perspective, there is no concrete evidence he did that. That is just your opinion and you don't believe everything people tell you." "But once he found out I wear them, he stopped talking to me and being with me and he's been ignoring me ever since," I said. "Yes, but other people were not there when it happened so that is your opinion and he could have decided on another reason he doesn’t want to be your boyfriend anymore and you are assuming your incontinence is the reason." "But he would have just told me," I pointed out. "Not everyone gives you closure when they break up, you think it would be helpful if he would tell you the reason why he doesn't want to be your boyfriend anymore and you will feel better if you know the real reason?" "Yes," I said. "Okay then but he doesn’t owe it to you."
When school got out again, I went home this time and I saw Allie again. I told her about Jason and him hating incontinent people. I saw Jennifer arriving and I shouted to her when she got closer “Have you taught your son to not to be a bigot yet against people who have incontinence?” Allie laughed as I shouted it. Jennifer gave me a mean look on her face. “Jason the incontinent people hater,” I shouted again so kids around me could hear it. Jennifer walked close to me and started yelling at me. “I want you to stop harassing my son now or I will tell the principal.” “I don’t care,” I said. Jennifer just walked away “What are you trying to do?” Allie asked me. “Teach him a lesson,” I said. “For dumping you?” "No, for hating incontinent people so he would change how he feels about them. Oh wait maybe he won’t learn anything because he is a blonde.” Allie laughed again. Allie was at her bus so she had to get on and I went to my van and got in. I knew I shouldn't be doing what I was doing to Jason but I couldn't help myself. I felt better every time I did it and it made me feel not helpless.
I arrived home and the house was a mess again. Aunt Bridgett was still gone and Mom was cooking. “What did you do again with Jason?” Mom asked angrily. “Nothing,’ I said. “Jennifer called me and screamed at me about you harassing her son.” “No I asked her if she has taught her son to not be bigoted against people who are incontinent,” I said. “She said you were harassing him.” “I hadn’t bothered him at all today,” I said. “Natalie, I don’t want you doing anything, it doesn’t matter if you are not bothering him directly, I don’t want you to do anything behind his back or when he isn’t around. You need to stop all this and move on. You and Jason are not friends anymore. It’s over. Move on, it’s over.” “I just want to teach him a lesson.” “Is it working?” “No I think he is too dumb of a blonde to learn it,” I said. “Okay, stop it, you are wasting your time so why even bother, move on.”
Aunt Bridgett soon arrived home and at the same time Grandma Del had walked in through the front door and she was carrying a couple bags. “Mom, what are you doing here?” Mom asked. “Amber called me and told me what was going on so I decided to come here to help out so Glen will be sane. I can’t have everyone suffering here because of him. Oh by the way I got you and your daughter something.” Grandma Del reached in the bag and pulled out a pack of adult diapers. “I picked these up as I left town.” Jesse and Timmy both saw the diapers and started laughing. “Mom, did you have to do this?” Mom cried. “What? Everyone in this family knows you have accidents so why is this embarrassing?” Grandma Del asked. “Grandma still doesn’t have a filter,” said Timmy. “What’s in the other bag?” I asked. “More diapers,” she said. “Oh I smell food, what are you making?" Grandma Del left the bags right by the stairs and went in the kitchen and she started to sniff the food and tasting it. “Mom, don’t touch, it’s still cooking,” Mom shouted. “I’m just tasting it.” Aunt Bridgett saw the whole thing and was shaking her head. “Let me take over, you go relax and clean while I do this,” Grandma Del told Mom. “No I got it,” said Mom. “Nonsense, I got this, I know how to cook.” Mom was starting to get upset so Aunt Bridgett butted in and told Grandma Del to just leave Mom to cooking. Grandma Del stopped and said, “Fine, let’s do some cleaning together.” I couldn’t play the Nintendo 64 because Timmy and Jesse were playing it. I patrolled the house again telling grandma Del and Aunt Bridgett what needed to be picked up or cleaned. I didn’t blow any whistles this time. “Grandma, what was the surprise you have for me?” I asked. “Oh I am glad you asked me that, since you are going to be sweet sixteen and your father got his drunken ass busted, I thought I would pay for you to take driver’s ed and I want to buy you your very first car.” My eyes lit up. “Really?” “Oh yes, you are going to be at the legal driving age now but I can still enroll you for class.” “Mom, will Anita even allow it?” Aunt Bridgett asked. “Oh nonsense, this is her birthday present," said Grandma Del. “You never did that for my son.” “This will help her be independent, so she can live a normal life.” “I want to drive so I can go anywhere I want,” I said. “You still have to pay for gas and car insurance,” said Grandma Del. “You would also need to get a job to pay for it.” “I am going to get one next week when I turn sixteen,” I said. “Mom, you don’t know what you are talking about,” said Aunt Bridgett. “Hey don’t ruin it for me,” I cried. “Have you told your daughter about this?" Aunt Bridgett asked. “No,” said Grandma Del. “You can’t just decide to do this without asking her mom and dad first, what if they aren't okay with it, then Natalie will be so disappointed.” “I will tell her to not ruin it for me and I really want to do it,” I said. "I will be paying all of it and they won't have to worry about spending a penny," said Grandma Del. "Don't listen to your grandmother," Aunt Bridgett told me. "This is a big decision and something all parents make for their kids." "I hope my parents don't ruin it," I said. "That is why I spoke up against it. I don't want you to get your hopes up." "What parent wouldn't want their kid to learn to drive?" Grandma Del asked. "Maybe they don’t want to pay for another car and pay more car insurance," said Aunt Bridgett. "I will pay for all of it and Natalie can get a job to pay her car insurance." "Car insurance is pretty expensive for teens and they can't work long hours like adults can." "How much does it cost?" I asked. "A lot, I pay one twenty a month for mine," said Aunt Bridgett.
Grandma and Aunt Bridgett cleaned while Mom cooked and my cousins ate before Kelly, Matthew and I could and Grandma Del didn’t like it so she criticized Mom about it when she explained to her we all wait until Dad is home before we eat. “You make your kids wait until their father is back? None of you should have to wait just because he chose to drink and get in his car and drive. This is unacceptable,” said Grandma Del. “Mom, you can’t come here and barge into my home and start dictating our life,” said Mom. “I just want everything to be healthy around here, no one has been happy here so I am here to help.” “And you have no right to tell me how to live my life, and you never even asked if you could come here because we don’t have an extra bed , you’re going to have to sleep with Bridgett.” “I brought my RV and I have my food too so no need to worry about feeding me and giving me room and board.” Aunt Bridgett and the kids ate and then Grandma Del cleaned the kitchen and put the rest of the food away. I was still playing my game in my room when Grandma Del told me to come in my Mom and Dad’s bedroom. I went in their room and Mom was in there too. “What’s going on?” I asked. “I don’t know,” Mom sighed. “She always does this whenever she comes over, bossing me around.” “So why do you let her stay?” I asked. “How do I make her leave? I have tried and she doesn’t budge.” Then grandma Del came back with the pack of diapers and told us to lay on the bed. “Mom, what are you doing?” Mom asked. “I said get on the bed, I want to try these on you and see how well they work.” I needed a clean diaper anyway. I wonder if Mom did too. “I am not undressing in front of my daughter,” said Mom. “You’re both girls, so stop.” “I am not getting my diaper changed in front of her,” Mom said again. “Oh nonsense, you’re both girls, you don’t need to hide yourself.” “I am not doing this.” Grandma Del slapped Mom across her shoulder with her hand and said loudly. “I say take your pants off and stop being a baby. You too Natalie.” Mom opened her mouth and stopped. I started taking my pants off. “You too Anita,” Mom started to remove her pants and I saw her diaper. She still looked dry. “Goodness, you’re wet and haven’t even changed yet. Good thing I bought new ones,” said Grandma Del. “Natalie, you’re very wet. Good thing I decided to change both of you." Grandma Del took out two diapers. "Good thing you both wear the same size or else I would be opening two packs.” “Natalie will pee all over the bed,” said Mom. “Oh I will just get an underpad for her while I will get a towel for you.” Grandma Del left and Mom just covered herself under the blanket. Then she came back with my underpad and laid it on the bed. “Get out from under there Anita,” she ordered. I laid on the pad while Grandma Del laid the towel on the bed but she pulled the quilt off Mom first and Mom was exposed again. Grandma Del slapped her leg and told her to get a move on. I couldn’t believe Grandma still treated Mom like a kid so I guess you never stop treating your kids like kids when they're grownups and hitting them. Mom got on the towel and Grandma Del undid my diaper and she went to Mom’s next and undid hers. “Can’t you do Natalie’s first?” she asked. “You are both ladies so there is nothing to hide about,” said Grandma Del. She had wipes with her too and rash cream. She removed my diaper and started cleaning me up and then she took the diaper away and unfolded the new diaper and put it under me and then she went to Mom’s next and did her. I got to watch her and Mom told me to not look at her. “Oh stop,” said Grandma Del. “There is nothing to be humiliated about, she wears them too.” I decided to not look because Mom had a scared look on her face and tried to put a pillow over her face but Grandma Del pulled it off saying she will suffocate if she did that. I took one quick peek and Grandma Del had Mom's legs spread apart with her knees up and feet on the bed and Mom had her hands over her face. I peed on the diaper while Grandma Del was wiping Mom’s bottom and putting rash cream on her. I saw her put her diaper aside and I saw it was wet in the middle. Grandma Del finished putting the diaper under her and got back to me. She saw my accident and said “Oh dear, I was too late.” She replaced the diaper with a dry one and she cleaned me up again and put the diaper on me this time and then got back to my mother. She put the diaper up between her legs and taped it closed. Then she picked up all three wet diapers and Mom’s face was very red. She put her pants on quickly. I put mine back on and Mom left to go get Dad. “Why did you change us together?" I asked Grandma Del. “Because I love you both.” “But Mom didn’t like it,” I said. “She will soon learn to get over it and there is nothing to be ashamed about, you’re both women, you can see each other naked, everyone pees, you both wear diapers so there is nothing to hide.” “Did you do this to her last time at during Thanksgiving when we were at Aunt Gladys’s and Uncle Nate’s house? Forced it on her?” I asked. “Yes. I didn’t take no for an answer when I wanted to change her. She also doesn’t change when she is wet, she never did either when she was a kid and would walk around in wet diapers until I took them off and she also would wet her pants and I always needed to remind her to go and threatening to put her back in diapers didn’t make her go sooner or even putting her back in them for a couple days. She’s told me how much you don’t change and you end up leaking so I always remind her she did the same thing; waiting too long to go to the bathroom and then having accidents.”
Mom and Dad got back and right away he asked where Grandma Del was. Aunt Bridgett pointed upstairs. Dad went up there and then I heard them arguing. “If anyone is going to be changing her, it’s me and we never do it around our children,” I heard Dad shouting. “I think Amber just made things worse around here,” I said. “Grandma Del is just controlling over our mother because she lets her do it,” said Kelly. “Why?” I asked. “’Cause she’s weak.” Dad came back downstairs after arguing with Grandma Del. We all ate and Dad made a comment about the house being cleaner and he was so glad they have finally learned. “My mom helped,” said Mom. “That’s why she came.” “She came to be a housekeeper?” “Yes.” “Great, we have a free housekeeper but yet she still wants to dictate your life and how you live it and still wants to change your nappies in front of our kids. How appropriate is that?" "She's said we're both girls," I said. Dad was shaking his head. "Grandma is not all there," he said. "Can I get my driver's license?" I asked. "We can’t afford it right now, you would have to take the classes, practice driving and I think Mum is too busy for that and it costs money to take the tests," said Dad. "Grandma wants to pay for all of it," I said. "What?" Mom asked. "You're kidding me," said Dad. "No, she really wants to pay for my classes and get me a car for my 16th birthday," I said. "She is out of her mind," said Dad. "I really want to drive," I said. "Just think about it, I can drive myself to work, I can go to places on my own, Mom wouldn't have to take me to my doctor's appointments anymore or pick me up from practice, she would have more time." "Is Grandma going to pay your car insurance because mine is going to be high and we might not afford to have anyone else on it and it's very expensive for young drivers." "Nope, I have to pay for it myself," I said. "You need a job for that." "I will be getting one after my birthday." "She is old enough to learn to drive," said Mom. "If my mom wants to pay for it, it’s good for us and good for Natalie. At least she will get some driving experience before she can afford to drive.” "It's her money and if she wants to pay for it, more money for us," said Dad. I was so happy, they said yes. I had more freedom ahead of me and I couldn't wait to drive so I could explore the country side and go on roads I never been on. "But you are paying for the gas young lady and for your own insurance and the tickets," Dad told me. "What if I don't have money?" I asked. "Then you have debt to pay and can't drive your car."

Chapter 9
Grandma Del decided to sign me up for driving classes the next day so she was looking in the phone book and making calls. Then my Mom called my name. “What?” I shouted. “Come out here, I need to ask you something,” she said. I paused the game and left the den. “What?” I asked. “Which day would work for you?” Mom asked. “Tell her what classes they have,” she told her mother. “They have Tuesday and Thursdays from six to eight fifteen PM,” said Grandma Del. “The next one they have is Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from three thirty to five forty five, the next one is Saturday and Sunday from ten AM to twelve fifteen PM. The next class will start February twenty fourth and that is on the weekend.” “I’ll take the next one,” I said. “The weekend?” “Yes,” I said. “She will do the weekends…Can I pay over the phone or do I need to mail in a check or pay when she starts? I’ll do it now, Anita, get me my purse, I believe I left it in the RV.” “You shouldn’t leave it out there,” said Mom. “The neighbor’s kids might go in there.” “I keep it locked, I have the key right here,” Grandma Del handed Mom her RV keys and Mom got her shoes on and went outside. We waited and Mom came back inside and said she couldn’t find it. “I will be right back, let me get my wallet,” said Grandma Del. She put the phone down and went outside and came back with her purse. “It was in plain sight, if it had teeth, it would bite.” Grandma Del took out her wallet and pulled out a credit card. She picked the phone back up and read off the numbers and turned it over and read something off of it and then she thanked them and hung. “Are you excited to start your first class?” she asked me. “Yeah,” I said. “I can’t wait to start driving.” “Happy birthday, this is your birthday present.” “When do I get my car?” I asked. “You have to get a learner’s permit first and then I am going to be teaching you to drive.” “Mom, I can teach her that,” said Mom. “You’re sure?” “You have your RV, I have the mini van.” “But do I get a car soon after I get my permit and then learn to drive?” I asked again. “Yes I will get you a car eventually but right now you are focusing on classes,” Grandma Del replied. I went back to playing my game. I couldn’t wait until my birthday now. I wondered what cake I was going to get and what presents I would get. Aunt Bridgett wasn’t here because she was at work so all her kids were home and Mom and Dad were watching them and so was Grandma Del. Dad was calm today because I didn’t hear him yelling at all and Grandma Del did a good job cleaning the house and Mom worked in her art studio again and a few people stopped by and looked at her work. I was trying to work out again how to get to the second floor in the Dodongo’s Cavern. Then Matthew came in the den and was watching me play. “What are you doing?” he said. “What does it look like?” I said. “I want to know what you are trying to do in the game?” "I am trying to figure out how to get to the top floor, I have been stuck here for weeks,” I replied. “Let me try and see if I can figure it out.” I handed him the controller and told him to no save anything. “I won’t,” he said. He started playing and I just looked at my old Little Tykes dollhouse. I brushed the dust off it and opened up my box of the mini doll furniture and put it in the house and I took the dolls out too and placed the baby in the buggy and one of the kids in the swing. Matthew kept playing and he was in a room again with a bunch of bomb flowers. He was messing around and playing with bombs and Deku sticks. I was feeling the furniture and the toy car when Matthew said, “I think I got it.” “What?” I asked. “See these row of bombs here, I think if you place a bomb in the middle, you might get up there. He put one of the bombs down in between and I saw them all exploding but not all of them went off. “Let’s me play it now,” I said. Matthew handed me back the controller. I put another bomb down in between and they all exploded again but not all of them did so I tried again. I decided to try and center the bomb. So I tired that and this time they all went off on both sides and the stairs came down. I was so excited. Now I was no longer stuck and I went up the stairs. I found another skulltula so I killed it and climbed up and got the token. I headed in the next room and I had to kill all the fire bats and then kill the armos and move the unlive one to step on the switch and I headed in the next room. I saw the lower level below and I was officially on the second floor. I went across the bridge to the next room. I had to fight the Lizalofos again after doing a couple rooms. I defeated them and the door opened for me and I went through it. I got stuck again but I eventually figure it out. There was another eye switch I had to hit to get rid of the other flames. I was eventually back in the main room again and I stepped on a another switch and it made one of the platforms go up higher to the second floor. So the game made me do all the rooms before making the platform go to the second floor. I was stuck again and Jesse was in the room with me watching me play. “I wonder what am I supposed to do next to get to the boss,” I said. I kept wandering around on the second floor and then Jesse said, “I wonder what would happen if you dropped bombs in the eyes” as I was crossing the bridge again. I didn’t know what he was talking about. “There are these eyes on the face you see when you first enter the cave,” Jesse said again. I tried to figure out what he meant. “I bet if you drop the bombs through the holes in the bridge, they might fall on the eyes,” said Jesse. “Oh,” I said. I think I knew what he was talking about. I saved my game and tried dropping the bombs down the hole. The game showed the bomb falling and I knew what I had to do. I kept trying and I nearly used up all my bombs and the mouth opened and it revealed another door. I went back to the first floor and opened that door. I did a couple more rooms and I opened another chest and got more bombs and went down the hole to the boss. I saw the giant King Dondongo and the battle started. I tried to hit it with a sword but it did no damage and he would open his mouth to blow fire out but I figured out I needed to stand to the side so the fire will miss. I tried to hit his back too but no damage and the fairy hinted about try feeding him bombs so I did that and it stunned him and I was able to damage him. It took me three attempts and he was defeated. All the lava dried up and turned into ground and I got the heart container and went in the warp and it brought me outside the cavern. I went back to the Goron City and got my reward and headed for Zora Domain next. I was so busy playing I hadn’t noticed Aunt Bridgett and Mom and Grandma Del had went grocery shopping because they came home with a bunch of groceries. Mom ordered everyone to help her carry in the groceries but Grandma Del took over instead telling everyone she’s got it and she will do it with them, everyone go back to what they were doing. “I am finally teaching your Aunt Bridgett how to eat healthy than buying a bunch of snacks and junk food and processed foods,” Grandma Del told me. “That will help her lose some weight.” “My dad says we’re not supposed to comment on anyone’s weight or what they eat,” I said. “Oh he only told you that so you won’t go around offending everyone about it but this is different. I didn’t tell her directly, I only told her I want to teach her how to properly grocery shop and I didn’t mention her weight or what she eats.” “Mom, you were telling me at the store what foods to buy and what food is empty calories and processed,” said Aunt Bridgett as she set a bag down on the counter. Then she said to Mom, “This is the last time I am doing it with our mother.” Grandma Del was putting the food away when Mom and Aunt Bridgett finished bringing in all the groceries. “I am going to be cooking dinner,” Grandma Del announced. I watched TV and Grandma Del went upstairs after she was done in the kitchen. Amber got Rufus out of his cage and had him outside so he could go potty. Skippy, Mittens, and Princess were getting used to having him in the house but Dad still didn’t like him running around free so they kept him in his cage. Grandma Del came down and I overheard her and Dad talking out in the garage. “’What are you doing with those?” he asked. “She won’t be needing these anymore,” said Grandma Del. Dad came in the kitchen shaking his head and he was holding another pop can again. Soon Mom and Grandma Del were in the kitchen and they started to make dinner. I was still watching TV. Mom was chucking the corn. “Where are you going?” Grandma Del asked. I looked and saw Mom was leaving the kitchen. “To the toilet,” she said. “Are you forgetting something? You’re wearing it,” said Grandma Del. “But I don’t want to wet it on purpose and these are only to catch my accidents.” “I don’t see why you should be stressing about making it to the toilet when you have a medical problem so get back here and finishing chucking that corn,” Grandma Del ordered pointing the knife to it. Then she said, “Feel better? Now get chucking.” “I would have made it if you would have let me,” said Mom. “But isn’t it easier just staying here chucking than racing to the toilet and getting your pants down and diaper off risking an accident and then you would have a big mess to clean up and then having to go upstairs to change?” Grandma Del asked. “Yes Mom this is a lot easier but it also makes me feel lazy.” “You are not lazy sweetie, you just have a problem is all and this is more practical than cleaning up messes you make. You have just much of a problem as Natalie does except yours is different but you still shouldn’t have to suffer just because you were never injured. You deserve a happy life and not being humiliated.” Mom went back to chucking the corn again. Then Aunt Bridgett came home with some food and she had bought a pack of pop. “I went back to the store and got some stuff I actually wanted and I got some pop too if you want any” she set it on the counter. Grandma Del shook her head. Aunt Bridgett opened the pack and took one out. “Anita, there is pop here if you want any.” Mom took a can out and opened it and drank it while she helped made dinner. I couldn’t believe what I had heard in the kitchen. Was Grandma Del making Mom wear diapers and forcing her to pee in them and not let her go to the toilet? Mom had also let her make her because she could have just walked to the bathroom ignoring her and fight with her about it and she chose to not do that. Aunt Bridgett also cooked in the kitchen because Grandma Del had asked for her help. “This is how you do it,” said Grandma Del. “Did you ask me to help you cook just so you can teach me how to properly make food?” Aunt Bridgett asked. “I am just showing you other ways of making food honey so you can eat better and feed your kids better,” said Grandma Del. “Unbelievable,” Aunt Bridgett said angrily. “Mom, can you back off a bit?” Mom asked. “I am just being a very caring mother because I care about my kids so much,” said Grandma Del. “We’re adults, we make our own choices,” said Mom. “But you have Brian who is all grown and moved out, you should understand how I feel.” “I have not told him what girlfriends he should be having or what hobbies he should do or what choices he should be making and I have not butted into his home and taking it over like you always do here.” “But look at you, you picked a man who can’t stop drinking and gets bothered by silly things and can’t pick the right friends, you were so innocent and naïve and vulnerable and still are.” “And Glen has taken good care of me and he may be a bit inept but I have always taken care of him too. We’re a team.” “How many times have I had to come down here whenever you were having a breakdown or getting a phone call from your husband or your oldest child because you had been picked up by the police and taken to the hospital and Brian being the man of the house because you were too stressed to take care of your own children? I am your mother so I will be in your life and continue helping you and help you make rational decisions and keeping you out of jail.” “I haven’t been to any hospitals since 1995,” said Mom. “I know, you have been taking anxiety medication and you have that bracelet and I’m here.” “No, I stopped taking medication doctors kept feeding me and now I won’t take any other than my anxiety pills. All they have done is made me suicidal and given me depression and making me go crazy and making me self-harm.” Aunt Bridgett stopped cooking and Grandma Del got mad at her and they started fighting. Mom got stressed out she started doing her weird behavior again by rocking her body and covering her ears. Dad saw it and told Aunt Bridgett and Grandma Del they were upsetting my mother and to quit yelling and arguing. “Just help in the kitchen, will you?” Dad asked Aunt Bridgett. “Then you help," she said. “Fine,” said Dad. “Fine,” said Grandma Del. Dad took over cutting the potatoes for Aunt Bridgett. Mom calmed down by then and was back to her normal self again.
When dinner was ready, everyone got to the table and ate. Kids sat at the nook again and all the adults sat in the dining room. “I can’t believe how much Aunt Anita let’s our grandma control her and take over, my mom will never allow that from her and when she tries, my mom doesn’t allow it,” said Amber. “I know right,” said Kelly. “That is what I hate about her.” “Conflicts upset her a lot,” said Matthew. "Grandma is taking advantage of it," said Timmy. I could remember when some guy got mad at her for using her checkbook to pay and that upset my mother so much, she was still not over it months later and wouldn’t go back to that store or even use a checkbook. That was back when I was in the third grade. Dad says she is fragile. Most people would also get upset too but they would get over it but not Mom. She will panic and have anxiety if brought back to that same spot and if someone started yelling at her, she panics and gets very upset. I think that was why Mom fought with Jennifer when she started yelling at her. Sometimes she starts to attack if she gets upset and that has gotten cops called on her and Brian has had to hold her or Dad. Grandma Del told me she would bite if she got upset and even getting too close to her, she would bite and they had to teach her to not do it. She has bit her teachers and other adults and other kids. Now instead of biting, she either hits or throws things or starts screaming but yet she doesn’t do it with us kids or with other kids. Mom has been banned from neighbors’ parties, especially bunco because of her behavior but she doesn’t care because she says she doesn’t like them and can’t be normal long when there is too many people and noise. “If your mom would let her help her too, you guys would have a better life,” I said. “They have been fighting none stop since you have brought her here Amber,” said Jaymee. “I wonder if that is why she didn’t want to stay with her,” I said. Everyone looked at me. “What?” I asked. “Was it something I said?” “I think that was exactly why,” said Jesse. “But yet she didn’t know about my Dad’s obsession with a clean house?” I asked. “I didn’t know he was this bad,” said Timmy. “What did you think it was?” Kelly asked. “That he only wanted clean house but I didn’t know he was going to freak out over us not bringing a cup to the kitchen quick enough or just leaving our stuff out we will return to later or him dumping out our drinks when we are still drinking it or getting uptight whenever we come in the house.” “You just have to take your shoes off outside,” I said. “But then our feet will get wet,” said Amber. “You keep your foot on your shoe until you step inside,” I said. “Then you pick up your shoes and bring them to the garage.” “That’s just crazy, just put a rug by the door.” “But Dad doesn’t like dirt.” “And your Mom enables this, is it because she also can’t handle a fight it would cause?” “Maybe,” I said.
The rest of the evening went fine and I still told Grandma Del whenever I saw something out of place. She would fix it and Dad didn’t have to throw anything out. Then she came in my room that evening just to change my diaper. I let her and she asked me how I liked these new diapers. “They’re fine,” I said. “They’re still thick and I like it.” “They were both thirty bucks a piece and came from Europe,” said Grandma Del. She was cleaning me up when she told me, “you handle this better than your mother, she will just fuss about getting her’s changed.” “Why?” “I don’t know. She didn’t fuss when she was a kid but only did when she had to wear them in the day time. Now all of a sudden this is a big deal.” “Why not just let her do it herself?” I asked. “I don’t want her to get a sore and when she pees, she just soaks the whole thing because her bladder fills up to full capacity but she did the same thing when she was a kid, soak her cloth diapers and not tell me she peed in them so I had to make her not wear any pants so it would be easier for me to see when she is wet and I would tell her we all know she wears them so she can wear her diapers openly.” “But you made her go outside like that too,” I said. “Oh yes because all our neighbors knew she had problems and was still peeing her pants and wetting the bed so we had nothing to hide.” “But you let my dad see her like that.” “Yeah, if he wanted to date someone who still wets the bed and pees themselves and that would be one guy out of the way if he didn’t like it.” “Mom says you did it as a punishment?” “She thinks I punished her?” “Yeah, she told me you would make her go outside as a punishment in her diaper and make her go without any pants on as a punishment” “Oh goodness. She never told me she felt that way.” Grandma Del finished changing me and then said she was going to talk to my mother now. She threw the diaper away in my pail and left my room. I went back to playing video games.
The next day went the same. The house stayed cleaner because Grandma Del would pick up and she took over the kitchen too by doing the cooking and she even took over the diapers. She changed both of us again and Dad wasn't here because he was out doing community service and he didn't make us go with him this time. Grandma Del changed us separately this time and she did Mom first in her bedroom and me next in mine. I guess Dad yelling at her made her not change us together again. "You both make the same amount of wet diapers together," said Grandma. "You're supposed to change after each accident." "I would be going through so many if I did," I said. "Some are made to hold a lot." "Yes but that is for when you don't have anywhere to change or if you are stuck in an emergency situation, you are not supposed to stay in the same diaper." "So if I leak urine or dribble, I am supposed to change, that would be like twenty-five diapers a day. I am always peeing and Mom goes a lot less than me." "Yes but when she pees, she floods it because she is going like two cups worth so you both go about the same amount but she just holds it." She got finished changing me and she threw the diaper in the pail and said "Goodness, this needs to be taken out." She pulled the bag out of there and it was half full. "It's not even full," I said. "You should always empty at least every other day so it's not smelling up the whole room." "That is a waste of trash bags," I said. "No it's not. Poop and urine smell and the pee smell gets stronger and stronger as it's left out so it's a good to empty it every other day, every day when you're not in school, and take it outside and have the trash can right by the garage and keep the lid on." Grandma Del left with the trash and she took it outside. When I walked Skippy, I noticed she had moved the diaper barrel out outside behind the gate right by the garage. I came back inside after Skippy’s walk and I saw she was lecturing my cousins about cleaning up spills and food when they make it so it won't bring in any rats or mice and any other bugs and so that way the mess won't get bigger and bigger if they clean it right up after they make it. "This is normal living," she said. "You clean every day and do this every day." "Really?" Jaymee asked. "Yes, everyone does. Your mother never liked to clean so she has always had dirty homes and you kids thought this was normal but it's unsanitary and gross." "But everyone had dirty homes where we lived," said Amber. "Were they all poor, did you live in a low income area? When you go in nicer neighborhoods, the yards are well kept and so are their homes. You've seen my house and Uncle Nate's and Gladys's and this one, they're all clean." "I thought they were all strange," said Jaymee. "No, you were the strange ones," said Grandma Del. "Now you can help your mother clean but what am I going to do when all you kids are grown up and moved out of her house, her house will get dirtier and dirtier." I was going to play the Nintendo 64 but Matthew, and Jesse were playing it. I got frustrated. I could never get to play it as much because someone is always playing it and ever since Grandma Del has come, there have been less messes so I wasn't able to do my chore because she kept beating me to it.
Aunt Bridgett came home later from work. First, she and the kids had went to church and came back and she got dressed again and went to work. I couldn’t imagine doing church for the rest of my life, what a waste of my time. It all boring and all you do is sit in the chairs and sign and then listen to the priest talk and that is so boring but I have never seen the priest say what you shouldn't do or believe in but Kelly likes it for some reason. She says all her friends go there but she can see them at school so that doesn't make sense going to church. Then there is Sunday school and that is even more boring. There is the singing which is fun and then all the kids go to Sunday School and then there is the reading and then the talking and that is so boring and after Sunday school is church and that takes up half of your day. That is like going to school six days a week and only having one day off. Dinner was just about ready by Grandma Del. Thank god she doesn't do church but she says she believes in god but she doesn’t really do church or religion. She goes sometimes. She called everyone to the kitchen when it was ready. She even managed to keep the kitchen cleaned while she cooked because I saw she had dishes in the sink and a sponge out. "Wow how did you not make a mess?" I asked. "I clean as I cook so there is no big mess to clean up at the end," she said. Mom always makes a mess when she cooks and then she cleans it up after dinner and Dad helps out and the rest of us. "Why can't you do that Anita?" Dad asked. "I can't do more than one thing at once," said Mom. "Oh nonsense, all you have to do is wipe the mess off the counter after you make it and when you need to put something in the sink, fill it with water and soap and put the dish in there and put each dirty dish in it when you are done using it. While something is cooking, you can clean," Grandma Del explained. "I can have you cook with me next time and I will show you." We all got out food and we ate and after everyone got done eating, Grandma Del pointed to the mess on the kitchen table saying, "Whoever made this mess should have cleaned it up right after they made it." "You're sounding like my dad now," said Kelly. "Am I?" Grandma Del asked. "What is the big deal about cleaning up a spill?" "You want this place to be a palace," said Kelly. "If you think leaving spills and messes and leaving it for someone else to clean up is normal, you’re wrong. Your mother shouldn't have to do all the work, you kids need to learn responsibility or else you will be dirty like your Aunt Bridgett. I see you kids have a chore list, good. Now get cleaning." I picked up the mess I made and Grandma Del told me I needed to wipe my chair and spot." "I didn't leave a mess there," I said. "You still ate there so you must always wipe it down," she said. I got a wet rag and wiped that spot and my chair. This did not make any sense at all. This was dumb. "It would be a lot easier if we all ate with paper plates," said Aunt Bridgett. "That would be a waste of money," said Grandma Del. "You can wash dishes, it doesn’t take that long and you run the dishwasher every day, if you teach your kids to clean and help out, you won't have a messy house and a dirty one." "No wonder she's poor," I said. "Yeah think of all that money you would have saved if you weren't always buying paper plates," said Dad. "And you shouldn't have a dog." "Excuse me?" Aunt Bridgett asked. "Glen stop," said Mom. "You would have more money if you didn’t have a dog because dogs are expensive," said Dad. "Glen, leave her alone," said Mom. "He's family, why not get rid of yours than trying to take away your kid's Christmas and now you can't afford to pay Driver's ed for your daughter and getting her a used car and why not get rid of your pets, you will have more money," Aunt Bridgett yelled. "Oh yeah at least I wasn't stupid to marry a jerk who likes to beat his wife," Dad shouted. "Hey hey hey," said Grandma Del. "Stop and just drop it both of you." Mom pulled Dad away as Grandma Del was holding her hands out at them. "Natalie, don’t say anything about finances," said Grandma Del. Dad walked away and Aunt Bridgett stayed in the kitchen. “But Dad mentioned it too,” I pointed out. “Yes, but you said it first and then he did,” Grandma Del explained. We finished cleaning the kitchen and then it was all nice and clean and a palace. “Whew that was a lot of work,” said Aunt Bridgett. “Oh nonsense,” Grandma Del said again. “If I were rich, I would hire you a housekeeper.” Aunt Bridgett didn’t say anything. “Hey you should move near us and I will clean your house for you,” Grandma Del offered. “Yeah yeah can we move in with her?” Amber asked. “I already have a job,” said Aunt Bridgett. “My offer will be open whenever you decide to come stay with me and I will clean your house for you,” said Grandma Del. “I don’t want to live with you mother and I chose to stay here but you came anyway,” said Aunt Bridgett. “Amber invited me.” “No she didn’t, she had no say in it, you just chose to come.” “She’s right Mom,” said Mom. “Just as long as you are messy here, I will stay until you learn to clean up and pick up after yourselves,” said Grandma Del. “Can’t have your sister and her kids suffer with Glen going crazy.” “You always rescue her,” Aunt Bridgett told her. “I’m a mom so that is my job. You’re never done with your children.” I can’t count how many times Grandma Del has always came whenever there is trouble here. But it only takes a phone call to make her come. Then she takes over the house while Mom does her own thing and totally ignoring everyone. Now she was taking over our diapers.

Chapter 10
I tried hard to ignore Jason by pretending he didn’t exist. None of the incontinent kids wanted me so I was alone again. All I had was Racheal Ann but she was too weird. My 16th birthday was getting closer and closer and so was my driver’s ed. On my last day of being fifteen, I went to school. No one still said anything about my diapers so that was good. I even decided I didn’t even need to worry about taking my odor remover pills since kids here wouldn’t know I have even pooped. Also I noticed Jason was not in school and I didn’t care. I figured he was sick. In Spanish, Mrs. Peggy came in the classroom and called my name. “We need to see her in the office,” she said. “Natalie,” Mr. Leaf said pointing at her. I grabbed my stuff and left the classroom with Mrs. Robinson. I went to the office and there was Jennifer and my mother with Grandma Del. “What’s going on?” I asked. “Sit,” said Mrs. Peggy. She didn't sound happy. I wondered what I did wrong. Maybe something bad had happened and they wanted to tell me the bad news. I felt nervous. What was going to be the news? I sat down and put my binder on the table. Mrs. Robinson stood at the back of the room. “Natalie, we talked last week about you and Jason, your inappropriate behavior with him,” said Mrs. Peggy. "What? I haven’t bothered him at all this week or even talked about him,” I cried. “You are spreading rumors, you’re aware of our anti bullying policy,” said Mrs. Peggy. I wonder if Jason had been lying saying I was still doing this. So this is why I was brought in here. They think I am still doing it. “Not anymore, I haven’t done it this week, Mom told me I can’t do anything to him or behind his back.” “It’s too late for that, kids have been talking about it and have been hearing about it from other kids here who also have the same condition as you and Jason is so upset he won’t come to school now.” “He did dump me for my medical condition and kids have been giving me support about it and it makes me feel better because they do care.” “She’s been very upset by him,” said Mom. “I tried to tell her he wasn’t the right person for her and it’s good this is out of the way now but she is having troubles moving on. I was not aware she was doing this." “I called you on the phone about it,” said Mrs. Peggy, “Yes that was when I knew about it.” “Natalie you have totally destroyed him here, how does that make you feel? He won’t come to school now and he is very upset about all this," said Mrs. Peggy. “Good, he won’t hate incontinent people anymore,” I said. “He has an issue with urine and feces,” said Jennifer. “He can’t help that.” “And I can’t help my medical condition,” I said. Mrs. Peggy sighed. “This is going to be hard.” “Okay, I know both of these kids have been hurt,” said Grandma Del. “None of them have control over what they have so it’s causing this conflict, Natalie has hurt feelings by him and he has hurt feelings by her but she does have control over what she does and chose to do this." “You are right, Natalie, you have done the most damage here,” Mrs. Peggy told me. “Your other principal said here you have behavior so I have been made aware so we are going to come up with a consequence for you. We can suspend you for a week or we can give you in school detention.” “What is going to happen to Jason?” I asked. “Nothing, he didn’t do anything.” “He fought me in the gym,” I pointed out. “He was provoked.” “But he broke a rule,” I pointed out. “And he said a bad word.” “Yes but we are letting that slide.” “Fine I was provoked too, him ignoring me and acting like I don’t exist,” I said. “Okay fine, Jennifer, would you be fine if Jason has a little vacation at home for a week?” Mrs. Peggy asked. “I don’t think he wants to be here,” said Jennifer. “Jason has been suspended too, are you happy about that Natalie?” Mrs. Peggy asked. “Yes,” I said. “Good, I will give you in school suspension for a week and good hope Jason comes back. So when we all leave this room, you are going to Ms. Shepper’s." “Anita, I think it’s time you find her an actual therapist,” Grandma Del told Mom. “I will check to see if Dr. Smith is finally taking new patients,” said Mom. “Make sure she works with behavior and with her disability,” said Grandma Del. Then the meeting ended a few minutes later and Mom told me to not talk about Jason anymore and only do it in the doctor’s office or when I am seeing Dr. Harding and it’s fine to talk about it at home but not in school. I felt I had done my deed already and I was done with Jason for good. I felt so powerful what I did and that will show no one can mess with me. I had always been weak and helpless and this time I was no longer helpless. I felt I had finally stood up for myself. Once kids see how strong I am and not helpless, they won’t want to hurt me anymore and be mean. I found it all strange they decided to bring this up now than last week. At least Jason hadn't been lying saying I was still doing it, it was the principal that decided to bring it up and punish me for the other kids actions. My mom used to tell me something was a long time ago and refuse to do anything about it if I was bringing up anything that happened a few weeks ago or a month ago or a few days ago. Now why was she okay with this? I had to go to Ms. Shepper’s and Mrs. Peggy came in there with me to tell her about my detention and every day I would have to come in here for my school work and eat my lunch in here too. Mom had already left with Grandma Del. I was alone again without Mrs. Robinson and it felt weird because I was so used to having her around all the time and this time I was by myself again with some other kids. For the rest of the day I had to sit here in class and I wasn’t allowed to have my head down or even close my eyes. I didn’t have any school work to do anyway but reading my script and my Spanish words. I was allowed to go to the office to change my diaper and other kids were given potty breaks but I was allowed to go any time for my break. Then school was out and I had to go home and I was to return here first thing in the morning when I come to school.
I saw Allie again. “Hi,” I said. “I scared Jason out of this school.” “Really? How did you do that?" she asked. “I told other kids he hates incontinent people and now he is too scared to come here.” “Wow, you really are mean,” she was smiling and laughing. I didn’t take her seriously because I knew she didn’t mean it. “I don’t feel so helpless anymore,” I said. I knew I had an ability now to get rid of students too. I once got myself out of a class here when we had Mrs. Kink and I caused her to not have control over her students anymore so she got me out of her class and pretended I was better off in a different class. But now she was gone. Now Jason was gone too. Allie had to get to her bus so she told me bye and I went to my van and got in. No one said anything about Jason hating incontinent people so I figured they must not heard about it at all. Soon all the busses and vans started leaving and we left too and Sam dropped the kids off and then my turn was next. Sam pulled in front of my house but not on the driveway because it was packed with Grandma’s RV and Aunt Bridgett’s car. I got out of the van and closed the door and ran in the grass to the front door. I opened it and took off my shoes and put them on the porch and I took off my coat and backpack. Grandma Del was in the kitchen baking. “How was detention?” she asked. "Boring,” I said. “I bet, your mother loved it when she was your age.” “Yeah because it kept her away from the other kids so I would rather be in there too than being picked on if I had that happening to me,” I said. “You want to go to the store and pick out a birthday cake since you’re here?” “Yeah,” I said. We left in her RV. It was just a small RV that took up only one parking spot. Grandma Del called it her motor home. It had a bed above the front seats and a bathroom in the back and a kitchen in the middle and table and seats and it was a 1970’s RV. It even still had the 8 track player. She had a case of 8 tracks on the floor between the seats. I looked at them and Grandma Del told me to play one of them and I just push it in the machine and it will play it. I put in a random 8 deck and it played a song but not from the beginning. Grandma Del started talking to me about the meeting we had at school and my behavior. She told me none of it was okay so I deserved to have a consequence. If Jason had told everyone I was icky and sick and told everyone my mother was gross and putting up signs, he would have gotten detention too. Then she said at the end I made a mistake and we all make mistakes and we learn from it. Now Jason was going to see me as his crazy ex. For some reason I didn't care what he would think. He was just a dumb blonde who had a stupid fear of poop and pee. He needed to get over it and quit being a baby. I sure showed him and I won. "I find it strange that Mrs. Peggy decided to bring this all up when it all happened last week," I said. "My mom always told me if something was a long time ago, nothing can be done and this was a long time ago because it happened last week," I said. Grandma Del started laughing. "You both are so in the moment. Just because something happened last week or a couple days ago doesn't mean there shouldn’t be any consequences," she said. "But why didn't she do nothing about it until today?" I asked. "That is so confusing." "Maybe because Jason was still in school until today and maybe the principal didn't know what was going on until they told her." "I still find it strange though," I said. "Why is it strange Natalie?" "I don't know, because it was all over and I had finally moved on and did what Mom told me to do so now I am being punished for what the other kids are doing." "I am sorry Natalie if you see it that way, I don't know how I can help you there."
When we got to Safeway, Grandma Del parked the RV and we got out. She told me to lock the door so I pushed the lock down right by the window and closed it. We went inside and went to the bakery. I looked at all the cakes and I saw the one with a huge heart. I looked at the others but they were all plain with flowers and they had small cakes too but we needed a big one. I kept looking at the heart one. It was shaped like a heart and it was a big cake and it had white frosting around the edges top and bottom. “I want this one,” I said. “That goes perfect with your sweet sixteen,” she said. “We can put the words sweet on it and say “sweet 16.” One of the bakery ladies came over to us and said “Hi, anything I can do for you?” “Yes, she wants this heart cake here and we want it to say Sweet 16, the number sixteen," said Grandma Del. The lady opened the door in the back of the display case and took the cake out and Grandma Del said “Actually put her name on it too, Natalie’s Sweet 16.” The lady did just that and I watched her squirt the words on it and then she asked us if she wanted us to put anything on the cake like sprinkles or any flowers and it will be all quick. “Yeah,” I said. “I want sprinkles and some ribbons on it like that,” I pointed to another cake. “I also want flowers too around the edges.” “No problem.” She got out the sprinkles and other frosting and we watched her put them on. I got bored watching so I walked around the bakery looking at all the sweets and I looked in the cake book at the other cakes. I saw a Teletubby cake and wanted it but there was no way they would make it in time for tomorrow and I wasn’t sure what my parents would think if I got a little kids cake. I even saw a 102 Dalmatians cake. I saw a Barbie cake too and a Pokemon cake and a sonic cake. I saw some Disney cakes too. Then soon the lady was done and she put my cake in the box and gave it to Grandma Del. I looked inside and saw the nice heart cake and it did have “Natalie’s Sweet 16” on it. “Hey good thing I was born this month or I wouldn’t have found a cake that matched my birthday,” I said. I associated the word sweet with Valentines because I picture heart when I see the word sweet or hear the word. Grandma Del also got some ice cream for tomorrow and she let me pick it out. I picked mint. Then she did a little grocery shopping herself by getting herself some food and she paid for everything and we went back out to her RV. Grandma Del had to unlock the doors with the keys individually because it was an old vehicle so it’s not like she could unlock one door and the rest unlock. She had to unlock my door and hers. We got in and I held the cake on my lap. The song came back on when she got her RV started. She put her food away and sat back down in the driver seat and we headed home.
We arrived home and I opened the door and took my seatbelt off first before getting out of the RV. Grandma Del took the cake from me and gave me the ice cream to bring inside. I took my shoes off and went in the house and put the ice cream in the garage freezer. Grandma Del brought the cake in and set it on top of the fridge. She got the floors all wet from her shoes. "Uh oh Grandma, you made a mess here and Dad is going to be so upset," I said. "I will clean it." She got out a mop and got it wet and wiped up the wet spots. "See, not a big deal, this was so easy." Aunt Bridgett saw it and rolled her eyes. "It's simple Bridgett, it only took me a couple minutes," said Grandma Del. Then she said to my mother, "I don't think she is ever going to learn so I am here until she moves out." Mom looked at my cake and said, "This isn't even a real birthday cake." "Yes it is," said her mother. "Natalie picked it out and see? It says 'sweet 16' so it fits." "But birthday cakes don't look like this, it doesn't say happy birthday and they are always rectangular." "Nonsense, you can have a birthday cake be any you want it to be. See, she even put flowers on it and these ribbons around the edges to make it look like one and Natalie didn't want Happy Birthday on it, she wanted this. Don't even ruin this cake." Grandma Del put the cake back and then she was grabbing Mom's pants and feeling her crotch. "Mom, what are you doing?" Mom cried. She squirmed and Grandma Del told her she was checking to see if she is wet. "Do you need to do this here?" "It's only quick." Mom kept trying to pull away from her mother but she just said louder "Hold still will you" and holding her arms hard. That got more attention because Aunt Bridgett saw it and Matthew. They looked at her. Grandma Del felt her bottom and then said "You're still dry, good." Mom just left the kitchen and so did Aunt Bridgett. "Why did you do that here?" I asked Grandma Del. "Just to see if she needed clean pants." "But why here and she does it herself when she needs it." "Apparently not since she has always had wet pants and doesn't change when it happens. You're supposed so change after each accident. Even when she was a little girl she hated getting her pants changed so it was always a battle getting it done without poking her skin. Then when she was out of them in the day time, it was hard getting her to the toilet so I never bothered night training her." Mom sounded like she was a lot of work. "If I hadn't kept checking her when she was a girl, she would have gotten sores all over and still not learn. Sometimes I had to change her before bed because she would pee in them before going to bed. It was like she liked it." "I bet she does or she would be changing sooner," I said. "You could be right. I bet she liked her crib too and high chair because it was also hard getting her out of those and it was hard getting her on regular food but it turned out she had stomach issues which she outgrew. She would only eat anything mushed or liquid so I had to grind all her food up making it baby food because it was all she would eat. It was always hard getting rid of her stuff she worn out or grew out of." "Why didn't you just do it when she was in school?" I asked. "It would have caused tantrums and anxiety. I had to wait until she lost interest in it and got her used to her new things. I just couldn't have her walking around with clothes that were two sizes small and looking like we didn't take care of her because she had holes." "Holes?" "In her clothes. So that's why we didn't bother trying to get her out of diapers at night because she had too much work and then I didn’t even bother when she was a teen. I doubt she would have allowed it and she never brought up she wanted to try." Grandma Del got back to cooking. She checked what she had in the oven. She took it out. "By the way, we're all eating here when the food is ready." "What about Dad?" I asked. She smirked. "He doesn’t come home until late and we're not waiting and he made that choice. Just as long as I am here, I am letting everyone eat at five or six whenever it's ready."
When dinner was ready we all sat down and ate and it felt weird eating at a normal time again. Mom didn't eat because she wanted to eat with Dad so he would have someone to eat with. I got done eating and I did the computer upstairs and it felt so nice not being forced to stay at the table. I looked on the diaper sites again about adults and older kids wearing diapers and teens. Then soon Timmy came up and told me he was doing his homework. I clicked out of the browser and brought his page back up. "It's still here," I said. I got out of the chair and Timmy sat down. I watched Goldeneye again in my bedroom. Mom soon got Dad and all us kids were forced to sit at the table with Dad while he and Mom ate together. I just sat with my Gameboy Color and played. Grandma Del still took care of the house and kept it cleaned. After dinner Dad came up to my room to talk to me. He sat on my bed. "Natalie, I am very disappointed in you, do you know why?" "Why?" I asked. "Take a guess." "Is it about Jason?" I asked. "Yes, so I heard about you were giving him trouble and now he isn’t in school at all, how does that make you feel?" "Happy." "Happy?" Dad asked. "Happy? Give me a reason why I should still take you to work?" "Because it's my birthday and you said you were going to do it and Jason won't be there," I said. "But you have in school suspension." "Yes but tomorrow is my birthday and would you take away my present if you told me you were giving me something else?" I asked. "Yes but I can still take away your present." "You said parents take their kids to work to show them about life and work and responsibility," I said. "Yes, but that can be done any time. I find it bothersome you do not feel bad about Jason." "Why should I? He hates incontinent people and he said Mom was gross and wouldn't want to be around her because she could be pooping and peeing herself he said. He even dumped me too over it and has ignored me because of it so why should I feel bad? How can anyone defend him and his behavior? If anyone ignored him and had nothing to do with him, I would feel a lot better." "Is that what you were doing Nat? Trying to get everyone to know what he did and how he feels about you so everyone will ignore him and pretend he isn't there?" "Yes," I said. "I also want everyone to know he pulled my pants down." "He what?" Dad asked. "He never got in real trouble for it either," I said. "That is harassment there and so wrong. When did he do that?" "Two weeks ago," I said. "I am going to see why nothing has been done because it is unfair you're the one being punished and they do nothing about him pulling your trousers down. You both are in the wrong." Dad left my room. I wasn't sure anymore if I was still going to work with my father.
* * *
“Natalie,” Dad was shaking me awake. I opened my eyes and looked at the time and it said 5:12. “What?” I asked. “Time to get up for work.” “What? I thought I wasn’t going anymore?” “You’re already being punished, get dressed.” Dad left my room. I wondered where Mom was. I was so tired. I rested and then Mom came in my room. She turned on the light and started picking my clothes. She threw them on my bed and she got my under pad and diaper out and changed me. Then she got me dressed and left my room. I threw my diaper away and went downstairs. I had breakfast and Mom had made Dad some eggs, she also made me some too and Mom told me “happy birthday.” “Hey where is my cake?” I asked. I noticed it was missing on top of the fridge. “I put it in the fridge to keep it fresh,” said Mom. I finished eating and I got my stuff ready. I knew I might be bored because it would just be sitting and waiting while Dad worked so I packed a word search book and a couple activity books and I packed up all my Game Boy games and Gameboy. I also packed a couple books I wanted to read and I also packed some diapers and my wipes and rash cream. I also brought some spare pants with for in case. I brought it all downstairs. I couldn’t play the Nintendo 64 because Jesse and Timmy were still sleeping.
Soon it was time to leave and we went out to the garage and got in the minivan. Mom took us to town and dropped us off at the bus stop where the bus comes and people park here to take the bus. It was still dark and Dad and I waited for the bus. It finally arrived and it said C-Tran and everyone got on. Dad paid for me and he showed his pass to the driver. We took a seat and the bus got on the freeway and it took us all the way down to Portland but it got off a few times to pick people up. It took us all the way to downtown Portland and we got off right by a park. Dad and I walked a couple blocks to his work. We went right inside and I looked at the floor and the walls and everyone was walking in in their suits and going up to their floors and I even saw babies and small children here and Dad told me there was a daycare here. Even little kids had to get up early. We got on the elevator and rode it up to his floor. Dad took me to his work area and he had his own private area and there were cubicles everywhere. Dad’s area was very neat and more organized than anyone else’s I saw. Dad got on his computer and I saw what he was doing. I was already bored so I took out my word search and started to do it. Dad even had a clock in his space so I got to see what time it was. I decided I wanted to walk around so I told Dad I was going to check this whole place out. “I don’t want you wandering on any floors and other work areas,” said Dad. “Why?” “Because people are working and I don’t want them to be bothered. This is not a playground.” “I’m not going to run around or play,” I said, “I know that but people here might be bothered by it and I don’t want to give them a bad impression. I will tell you what, I will introduce you to everyone on this floor later.” “Okay,” I said. “There is a bathroom down the hall where you get off the elevator and to the right,” said Dad. I just sat here and continued doing my word search and I looked at Dad’s things. I saw he had family photos of us and some recent ones from last year. I also looked in his drawers and Dad was working on some project on the computer. “I am going to get some coffee, do not touch my computer, this is my work and it’s very important so if something happens to it, it can cause my job to be in jeopardy. Do you want anything? They have cookies or biscuits or brownies or juice.” “Sure I’ll take something,” I said. “What would you like?” “Can I come with you?” “Yes.” We left his work spot and Dad took me back to where the elevators were and we went back down to the bottom level and went to the coffee stand. There were tables and chairs everywhere and it was like a cafeteria. Dad ordered coffee and I picked out a scone. Dad paid and we went back up to his floor. It got time to change my diaper soon so I changed in the restroom but I had to let Dad know where I was going. Then after I was done, I went back to Dad and he started to walk me around the floor introducing me to his co workers. I saw all their work space was messy or disorganized and Dad’s was a palace. “I want to introduce you to my daughter,” said Dad to a younger lady. She looked at us. “This is Natalie, she is sixteen,” said Dad. “It’s my birthday,” I said. “Oh happy birthday,” she said. “This is Sai,” Dad told me. Sai had dark skin and dark hair and she talked funny when she spoke. “Where are you from?” I asked. “Asia.” “What country?” “Hong Kong. You sound like your father.” “She picked up after my accent,” said Dad. We left her area and went to the next area and Dad introduced me again. I got tired of saying the same thing over and over so I quit saying it was my birthday and I let Dad do all the talking and Dad started to tell everyone I was shy because I wasn’t saying much. I wasn’t shy but Dad just wanted to pretend I was. This all got boring halfway through and when we were finally done, it was already time for lunch so Dad pulled out his money and gave me twenty bucks. He told me to go to McDonalds and I can get whatever I wanted but he wanted a chicken sandwich and no meal and he wanted sweet tea with it. “There is a McDonalds two blocks down, it’s on 6th Avenue, when you leave the building, you will be on 5th Avenue and you walk right and turn left on main Street and walk until you get to 6th and there will be the McDonalds on the corner of 6th and Main.” Dad wrote it all down and drew the map for me showing me where I will see it. Then he gave me the paper. He also wrote down what he wanted from there and gave it back to me again. I left and headed to the first floor and left the building. I followed the directions on paper and I saw the McDonalds. It was in a building under a parking garage and if they didn’t have those M’s on the windows and the doors, I would have missed it. I crossed the street and went inside. It was packed and I waited in line. I decided on a Happy Meal and I only wanted diet coke since it’s zero calories. I waited for my turn to come and then I thought I saw someone I knew. Up ahead was Mrs. Kink. She was in line waiting and I felt nervous. I just turned my head hoping she wouldn’t notice me. I wondered what she was doing here. What was she in Portland for? Was she shopping or did she work down here too? Lot of people here were all workers on their lunch break I could tell. My heart was pounding hard. Then Mrs. Kink’s turn came and she ordered. Then she was given her number on her receipt and she sat down. She looked my way and I was glad she didn’t seem to notice me. My heart calmed down and the rest of me calmed down. My turn finally came and I placed my order and Dad’s. Then I paid and was given change back and I filled Dad’s drink and put the top on and I also stuck it in the cup holder they gave me. I filled mine too with diet and put it in the cup holder. I looked around for Mrs. Kink and she was waiting at a table. I sat on the other end far away from her as possible. I waited for my number to be called and soon it was. I got up and picked up the bag. Mine was inside the big bag with Dad’s food. I saw Mrs. Kink again as I was leaving and she was looking my way. I was so glad I was out of there. I walked to the curb again and I saw Mrs. Kink outside with her food. Was she after me or was it all a coincidence? I crossed the street and then she did too. My heart was pounding again and my other feelings came back. I didn’t know why I was scared. It’s not like she was going to stab me or take me. I walked quicker and she walked after me and I decided to run. She ran and I decided to try and ditch her so I ran down Main St. and then I decided to cross so I ran across the street while there were cars coming and cars stopped while I ran and I made it to the other side. I kept running and then I was at the other curb again and I looked back and Mrs. Kink was still there so I ran again and across the street again and this time she didn’t wait so she ran while cars were still coming and they slammed on their breaks while I ran in the Portland Building. I turned around and saw there was an officer with her. I just went inside and went back up to my Dad’s floor. I was sweating and breathing hard and my heart was still thumping. I brought Dad his food. "You got a work out,” he said. “Yeah,” I said. I took out my food and left Dad’s and I started to eat mine. I still felt scared. It’s not like she was going to come up here and find me. What could she possibly do to me? I managed to run with drinks and food and I lost Mrs. Kink. I never wanted to leave Dad just in case she was in this building looking for me. I never wanted to go for a walk either in this building. I was fine staying here where I felt safe. If Dad left, I wanted to go with him. Dad asked me what was wrong and I lied saying I was fine. I didn’t feel comfortable telling him what happened and I had a feeling he wouldn’t believe me and he would just think I was crazy. He would just think I imagined it and she wasn’t after me and maybe I just thought she was. He had not believed me before when I would tell him things. The rest of the day went boring but I stayed and colored or read but I had to leave to change my diaper and I also pooped so I had to change it. I felt nervous all over again because I couldn’t ask Dad to come with me or he would wonder why I wanted him to come so I felt nervous as I went on my own. I felt calmer when I didn’t see Mrs. Kink anywhere. I went in the restroom and looked under the stalls and didn’t see any feet. I changed and threw the diaper away and washed my hands. Then the door opened and I jumped and I was happy to see it wasn’t Mrs. Kink. The lady went in the stall and she started peeing. I left the bathroom with my bag and went back to Dad’s work spot. “Are you still taking your odor medicine?” Dad asked. “No,” I said. “Why?” “Kids at school won’t know I pooped myself because they won’t know the smell is coming from me, they will just think someone farted. Kids at my school are not that smart to know,” I replied. “Natalia, you should still take them because so no one will smell it,” said Dad. “They won’t know I did it,” I said. “It doesn’t matter. You don’t want to stink in public do you or here? What if you had done it while I was going around introducing you to everyone or what if you had done it at McDonalds?” I realized why I should still keep taking them. It wasn’t about to keep kids from making fun of me or getting mad at me for pooping. It was so I wouldn’t smell in public. I could stay in my messy diapers longer and not worry about finding a bathroom right away. I could stay in them at home too and not have to stay in m room until I changed. I could have Jaymee sleep in my room again and I wouldn’t smell. But I liked being alone and not sharing because I still had my freedom to do anything in there. Then Dad’s boss popped by and I didn’t like how he treated him. He talked to Dad in a hostile tone and was putting him down and Dad was taking it all. I was feeling angry so I told him to stop talking to my dad that way but Dad scolded me for interrupting. I felt confused. Why was he mad at me? Then his boss was done and he left. “Natalie, you can’t do that when grown-ups are talking, especially if it’s between an employee and boss,” he said. “Dad how could you let him treat you this way?” I said. “He’s my boss so he has all the power and can fire me if he wants. All he would have to do is find reasons and he is doing anything he can to get rid of me.” “How?” I asked. “Making it hard for me and he is hoping I will get tired of it and quit,” Dad explained. “Is that why you are always in a bad mood when you get home from work?” I asked. “Yes.” “Why does he want to get rid of you?” “I don’t know. For some reason I get on peoples bad side and then I have enemies. Did you notice how I never interacted with my co workers or even ate with them? I eat alone and I stay here.” Wow, Dad was different at work too. “Do you wish you were normal here?” I asked. “What’s normal?” “Being different and not like everyone else here,” I said. “I’m Glen. I do not wish to be anything.” “Do you wish you weren’t different?” “Life would be boring is everyone was the same.” Dad left a few times to stretch his legs and he would come back. I always went with him. The batteries in my Gameboy had died so I had to take them out and throw them away. I started looking to see if he had any new batteries around here. I dug in his drawers and then I heard Dad asking "What are you looking for?" "Double A batteries, mine died," I said. "I don't have any here. But they do have a store on the bottom floor, if you go around and around the corner to the left, I am sure they will have some," Dad opened his wallet and gave me a few ones. "Dad I still have change left over from the money you gave me," I said. "I owe you money anyway so keep it and any left over I just gave you, keep it. " "Okay. Dad, can you come with me please?” “Natalie, I am working and the store is in the same building but you just have to go outside and turn left and turn the corner and it will be there.” I decided I didn’t want to go because what if Mrs. Kink was still around? She could be waiting for me outside. “Aren’t you going to get batteries?” Dad asked. “Not anymore.” “Okay, whatever.” He took the ones back from me and I sat and read another book. Then I heard a sound. I looked up and it was another pretty thin lady at the door. "Hey." "Oh hi Jill," said Dad. They did a small talk and then she said "Your daughter has been very good and has not caused us any trouble." "Well she is old enough, I wouldn't bring her you know," said Dad. "If I brought mine here, they would all be running all over and they are twelve and fifteen." "If you just bring one at a time," said Dad. "Oh don't even start." Then she left. "I am surprised you didn't introduce me and her," I said. "We already did, remember?" "Oh." I must have saw her already when Dad was taking me around introducing me to his coworkers and I couldn't remember all their faces or what they all looked like. "Are you two friends?" I asked. "We were." "What happened?" "Remember when we made that deal at home about keeping it all a secret and I will get you your Nintendo 64?" Dad asked. "Yes, it was her you were cheating with?" I asked. "Yes." "And she hates my mom," I said. "I don't know if I would say hate, hate is a strong word," said Dad. "So why were you two talking?" "I'm just being friendly." Jill came back a little later and she had her purse with her. "Would you mind if I gave your daughter something for her birthday?" She pulled out a bill and held it in the air. "Oooo," I said. "Jill," said Dad. "What's wrong with her giving me a present?" I asked. "Go ahead," Dad sighed. Jill handed me the bill and she said to me smiling "Open yourself a savings account and use this for your fund." Then she looked at Dad and changed her look. Then she left the office. I looked at the paper money and it was a $100 bill. "Whoa, one hundred?" I said. "She did that just to get to me," said Dad. "Why?" "I decided to put her in the coworker zone," said Dad. "What does that mean?" "What I mean is things between us was going more than just friends and I am a married man so I decided it was best we only see each other at work only and not outside it and she got mad and said things about your mother. Some people do not take rejections well like how some people don't take break ups well but she did not go putting up signs at work about me or gossiping. Do you know what would have happened if she did that here?" Dad asked. "What?" "She would have gotten fired." "Why would the boss fire her if he doesn't like you?" "There are rules they have to follow and there would have been a lot of witnesses and he can get in trouble for not terminating her employment and I can sue. Give me the money?" "Why? It's mine," I said. I will put it in the bank." "Why?" "What are you going to do with it? Spends it on games? She doesn't know you already have an account so I am going to put it there." I gave him the money and he put it in his wallet.
When five o clock came, it was time for Dad to pack up and shut his computer down to head home. He turned everything off and turned off the lights and left. I looked around for Mrs. Kink and didn’t see her. I felt calmer. We went to a different bus stop again and waited. "Why are we at a different bus stop?" I asked. "Because the other one is only for morning stops," Dad explained. "I think it's cool they bring buses down here from up there," I said. "Yeah, good thing they expanded it to our town." I took out my book and read while waiting for the bus and soon Dad nudged me saying "Natalie." "What?" I asked. Dad moved his eyes and I noticed the bus was here so we got on with a few other people. Dad showed a piece of paper and his pass to the diver and sat down by me. The bus left the downtown area and it went over the bridge and got on the freeway. The bus took the carpool lane and all the other cars were going slow. We went across the river again and we did a few stops on the way back to Saltwater and it even stopped at a transit center and then it got back on the freeway and it took us to Saltwater. I looked at the clock and it was close to seven. The bus went into town and it pulled into the parking lot they just built here and it had a few shelters for people to wait and benches for people to sit on. The bus pulled in front of the shelters and everyone got off. No one else got on. Mom was already here waiting for us in the minivan. "How did you like Dad's work?" Mom asked me when we got in the car. "Boring," I said. "It's boring when you are not working," said Dad. "She did very good. She even got my lunch for us and went with me everywhere whenever I had to leave my work spot and now we're starving again." Mom took us home and when we got home, Kelly, Matthew, and Mom had already ate but Dad made everyone sit at the table again while me and him ate. The house was clean again and no messes were made. Then next we did my birthday cake and we called everyone to the table. Mom got out my birthday cake and she got the candles out of the drawer and put them on the cake. Dad had matches and he undid the whole box and had it out flat. He lit the candles and we all sang happy birthday. I made a wish and blew out all the candles. I didn't get them all out at once and we started to take them off the cake. Mom had out plates for us and Grandma Del started to cut the cake. We all had a piece and some of us had more. I only had one since I was on a diet. Then Grandma Del and Aunt Bridgett left and came back with a birthday bag with tissue in it. "This is for you," said Grandma Del. "Cool," I said. "What? She gets a present and all I got were checks," said Kelly. Grandma Del set the bag on the table and I looked at the tab and it said From Grandma, Aunt Bridgett & Mom. I took the tissue out and saw my presents in there. I took one out at a time. "A Goldeneye player's guide book," I said holding it up. “I got you that,” said Mom. I took out another item. “Wow nail glitter polish." "I picked that out," said Aunt Bridgett. I saw a Nintendo 64 memory card in the bag and took it out. "Wow, a memory card, just what I needed." "Indoor voice, you're shouting," Dad told me. There were also shirts in there so I pulled them all out. They had words on the front with pictures and one shirt said, "I have a leaking problem" and it had a picture of a broken pipe with water dripping out. Another shirt had words in the back with an arrow pointing down saying "Loading Zone" and it had a street sign with the words on it. All my cousins were laughing and Kelly said, "Who got her those dumb t shirts?" and Mom said, "I did." I should have known, Mom and her gift disaster but at least she got me the Goldeneye player’s book. "Mom, you seriously don't see anything wrong with them?" Kelly asked. "It's just a gag," said Grandma Del. "I am not wearing these," I said. "Oh you don't have to, these were just meant for humor, we're not expecting you to actually wear them," said Grandma Del. "Isn't your mom funny?" "Yes," I said. "You should see all the presents she has gotten us over the years but at least she finally got me the right one this time. This," I held up the Goldeneye book again. "I helped her with that," said Aunt Bridgett. "She picked it out all on her own," said Grandma Del. I picked up the last shirt and it had a picture of a shipping box with stuff inside it and padding and it said, "All padded up." "She can still wear those out in public and no one will know what they mean," said Dad. “I am not sure about the arrow one,” said Grandma Del. I had one last present in the bag and I pulled it out and it was a James Bond movie, the newest one that was ever released. "The World is Not Enough," I said. "That was from me," said Grandma Del. "Who got me the memory card?" I asked. "I did," said Aunt Bridgett. "Wow, despite being poor." "Natalie," said all the adults. "What?" I said. "No talking about finances," said Grandma Del. "Sorry," I said. "I just didn't think she would get me something that would cost a lot." "It was only nine dollars and that nail polish was only six bucks so I didn't spend very much for you," said Aunt Bridgett. "Plus taxes," said Grandma Del. "They're a lot cheaper here." I brought all my items to my room. I put my shirts away and my nail polish and I started looking at my player's guide book. Then Amber came in my room and asked what I did with my nail polish. "I put it in my drawer," I said. "Can I try some on?" "Sure," I said. "Can Kelly?" "Sure," I said. "Which drawer?" I pointed. Amber went to the dresser and opened it and found it and took it out. She left my room. While I was listening to the new Spice Girls CD and looking at my TY beanie collection, I heard Grandma Del scolding Kelly and Amber in her room about my nail polish. “What are you doing with Natalie’s nail polish?” “She said we could use it,” said Amber. “I don’t care, it’s hers and you can’t be using it all up.” Grandma Del was being weird. It was my present so I could do what I wanted with it. “Give it back to her now,” Grandma Del ordered. Then she came in my room with my nail polish. “I said they could use it, why did you take it from them?” I asked. “Because it’s yours and they will just use it all up. You were nice to let them try it but I doubt you want them to keep using it until it’s all gone.” She closed my door and I took my shower and got diapered and I went back to my room. I decided to try on the nail polish and use it to paint with in my coloring book. I never liked nail polish but I liked the smell and enjoyed feeling the brush but then the pain part of it is having to wait until it dries and you can’t do anything or even scratch an itch. I seem to always itch whenever I have to hold still or keep anything still. Plus it gets on my skin and I have to be very careful to not get it on anything. How do people stand nail polish?
The next day I returned to detention. It was the same as on Wednesday, potty breaks, changing breaks for me, having to bring my lunch back to class and eat it in here and I still got to see Dr. Harding and he talked to me about my behavior and he said, "So I hear Jason still isn't in school." "Oh," was all I said. "How does that make you feel?" "At least I don't have to see him so that makes me better because I don't have to see him and get upset again each time," I said. "Did you know people say it's never a good idea to date someone at work? This is why. This is also why people are not allowed to date their students or date their patients and so on. Do you understand why?" "No, why?" "Because you still have feelings for that person so if they are your teacher or your doctor or your therapist, it makes it hard to put that aside and it can cause conflicts and people sometimes do crazy things after a break up. I want you to read these stories here from this article and tell me what you think." He opened his folder and gave me something printing from the computer. I saw it had been printed off the internet. I started reading it and all three stories were horrible. One lady claimed her ex sexually abused her child and that destroyed his career and his life. While the man was able to prove his innocence and there was no evidence against him and the child showed no signs of the abuse, his life was still ruined because people still thought he did it. He had to move to start fresh and he lost his friends and he had to change careers because his reputation was ruined. Another one was by a child who didn't like her mom dating so she planted her little sister's panties with his things and told her she felt creeped out by him and hinted she should peek in his stuff so she did and found her child's underwear and she dumped him and made a doctor's appointment for her sister. The last one was destroying all her things her ex gave her and going to his house and setting his car on fire he had left outside on the driveway and she had done it at night. I gave it back to him when I was done reading. "Well what did you think?" "Why did the kid not like her mom's boyfriend?" I asked. "I don't know but the point is people do crazy things with their ex's and it can destroy their lives and some even go to jail for property damage and this girl was able to destroy her mom's relationship and I am sure the man knew the girl planted her sister's underwear. Natalie, lot of teens need counseling when they have break ups because they date other students in their school and they need counseling because they will keep seeing that student. But you found the easy way and this is not healthy. Were you trying to get him out of this school?" "No," I said. "What was your intention then?" "To get kids to not like him and so they know what he did to me so they know and won't be his friend or even date him." "Yes and you know how it feels when someone turns everyone against you?" "Yes but that is why I am nice to people so this won't happen." "Was Jason nice to you?" "Yes until he pulled my pants down and dumped me over my medical problem, that wasn't nice. If I dump someone for being in a wheelchair I would deserve for everyone to know what I did so they know what kind of person I am." "You know what I know about Jason, he is very grossed out with urine and poop and some people can't handle it. That is why not everyone is a nurse or a doctor or a caregiver. It does not make them bad people or mean." "But he doesn’t have to change me and it's not like he has to see it because it's in my diaper and I don't change around him and he doesn't need to see it," I said. "Yes but it's what you do in it and it's the smell and he might smell it even if you can't." "But he was fine with it before he even knew so he could handle it." "I know this is very confusing for you so that is why I am here to try and help you out with this." "I would be happy if he didn't come back and at least I wouldn't see who else hates me for my problem," I said. Dr. Harding laughed. "Why is that funny?" I asked. "You don't want to see who else feels the same way as Jason you're saying?" "Yes, kids were mean to me about it at my old school. If I am going to have kids here hate me for it too silently, I would rather not be here if I knew." "I see what you mean now and that helps me understand better. You have been hurt by so many kids and when Jason broke up with you about it, it triggered those hurt feelings so you reacted to those feelings. This wasn't about him. We need to work on overcoming those hurt feeling so they won't keep coming back." "What do you mean this isn't about him? Of course it is." "You just told me kids were mean to you about your problem so when Jason dumped you, you got those hurt feelings again and I think your past contributes to what you did with Jason so if I help you overcome those hurt feelings, you won't keep living the past and getting upset again every time someone breaks up with you over it or makes a comment about it. You will easily not let it bother you and you can move on without feeling vindictive. You don't want to do this just so you can move on." "It would be so nice if everyone was nice to each other and didn't dump people over their problems and these problems wouldn't exist in the world," I said. "I know but the world will never be perfect so we must adapt to it." We talked about Jason for the rest of the session and I had to return to detention when it ended. I even had to miss choir and drama because of detention. At least I wouldn't miss Driver's ed.

Chapter 11
The next day was my first day of Driver's ed. I got up and got myself ready and I had diapers packed and my wipes and rash cream. I had a bowl of cereal and then I played GoldenEye using the player's guide and then Mom took me to my first class. It was located right at my old high school so it felt weird walking in my old building and Mom went with me to make sure I found my class okay. The class was located in the career building and it had a computer lab in there and a room with kitchens and a sewing room and a garage for woodworking and for where kids work with cars. I also noticed a classroom had a nursery with cribs and toys and changing tables and rocking chairs. I didn't remember this being here. There were signs that pointed towards the classroom where driver's ed would be held. We had to walk through the garage where the woodworking takes place and auto mechanic and welding and it was in a classroom with desks. I noticed some of my old school mates. I felt nervous because what if they are mean to me so I asked mom if she can stay here with me because there were kids here that don't like me so they could be mean to me. Mom said she would and she would just stay in the back. I read again and more students arrived and it was packed. Then the teacher started class. "Good afternoon. I am David Barre. I am your driver's ed instructor and I have been teaching this class for five years now. I know some of you are here because you are getting your first license rather you are a teen or an adult and we are going to be going over the rules and traffic safety of the roads and we will also be doing thirty hours of driving and each class we will take turns driving and it will happen outside of class. We will also be doing the written test and the driving test and if you pass, you get your license. If you are under eighteen, you will only get your Intermediate license and if you are under 16, you can't get it until then, you can only have a learner's permit. So we are going to be introducing ourselves and tell us a little about yourself and why you are here and if you don't want to say anything, this is fine and you can only tell us your name, let's get started." He held his hand out to a student in the front row in my row. "My name is Todd and this is my first time getting a license and I live in Ridgefield and I am taking this class to get my learner's permit." Then the teacher looked at the next person behind Todd. "I am Sarah and I go to school here and I am ready to get my license so I am taking this class." I was the fourth person in the row so when my turn came, I said "My name is Natalie and I used to go to school here but I go to another school now and my grandma signed me up for this class as a birthday present because I want to drive and she wants to get me my first car when I have my learner's permit. I am hoping to get my license too this year and that I pass the tests to get it." Then the teacher moved onto the next person behind me. "I am John and I am here to take the class." He sounded like an older man so I looked at him and he looked older than my parents. Then the teacher looked in the back and then he said "The lady over there please standing." "Me?" Mom asked. "Yes." "I am not part of the class, I am only here with my daughter because she is nervous." "Well you would have to register here too," said the teacher. "I am just here with my daughter, I already have my license and don't need to take this class. " "I am sorry, which daughter is it?" Mom pointed to me. "Oh, well you are going to have to register if you need to be in class with her." "You know what, I will just step outside and if she needs me, I will be out there." Mom got her purse and left the classroom. I felt nervous all over again. David went back to teaching. Then he started to hand out textbooks about driver's education. He told us we will be reading through the first chapter and at the end will be a mini quiz and we will all go through it together. I started reading and I enjoyed learning about the road and driving.
After everyone got done with the chapter which took about twenty minutes, we all went through the mini quiz together. David would read the question to us and then pick one of us to tell him the answer. Even I participated because I wanted to show my intelligence to my old school mates. I always love shocking them what I know.
After we got done with the mini quiz, we watched a video. It was about driving safely and showing what happens when you don't pay attention and if you drive too fast and it showed clips from movies where cars have crashed into buildings or people hitting cars and the video also mentioned cyclists also have to pay attention to where they are going and it showed a movie clip of a woman crashing her bike into a parked car and going over it. I recognized that scene out of Wayne's World. "You also should be careful with dogs," said the instructor in the video and it showed a scene from 101 Dalmatians with Pongo pulling Roger in the streets of London and cars crashing. "As a pedestrian, maybe you shouldn't stand out in the street," and it showed a scene from Leave it to Beaver with him standing in the middle of the street. "And you should also watch for pedestrians and ease off the gas peddle when you see them crossing," and it showed the pie guy from the movie slamming on his breaks and pies falling down on him. Then it showed a scene from a movie of a lady looking for something in her car while driving and then she hit something and it showed she hit a child and it was raining out very hard. David paused the video. "What happened there?" "She wasn't watching the road," I said. "She was going too fast," said John. "Right," said David. "If she had driven slower based on the weather conditions of the road and wait until she was stopped before looking for something, she would have seen that girl on her bike and slowed down in time, yes?" I heard someone asking something and then David said "Oh I am not sure what movie it was from, I haven't seen it." Then he unpaused the video and we kept watching. When it ended, David turned it off and the TV. We all discussed the video. I raised my hand. David called on me a couple minutes later. "I thought it was cool they used parts from movies for the video for bad driving," I said. "Yes, I think this was more aimed at young audience so they could get them more interested and keep their attention. Okay, does anyone in this class have a learner's permit?" Some people raised their hands and David said "Okay, you guys can sign up for driving and the rest of you, before I can let you drive, you must get a learner's permit and if you are under eighteen, you need to have your parent or guardian. You can go to any DMV office for it and you need to have your proof of residence and identity. That can be your birth certificate, adoption papers, social security number, passport, your ID card, and your parents must also prove their identity as well. Are there any questions?" "Yeah what can I do if my parents are not able to take me to get my permit?" Amira asked. "Well you would then need a stand alone document and that can be a passport if you have one or your immigration ID if you are an immigrant, or a US citizenship if you weren't born here, or a letter from Department of Children services if you are in the foster care system or it can be from A list documents or from B list documents or you might have to wait when you are eighteen to get your license if your parents are not supportive of you getting your first license." Then David said to the whole class. "Also when you have your permits, you can also practice driving on the road but you must be with someone who has had a valid driver's license for the past five years and has operated a motor vehicle that time and you must not have anyone else in the car with you but that person. If you want to know what the laws are you can stop at your local DMV." When class was over, everyone was leaving. I left and found Mom waiting for me in the hallway. "We need to go to the DMV to get my learner's permit so I can do driving for this class," I said showing her my waiver. "Also I need is my proof of residence and identity." "Okay," was all Mom said. She took me back home and I ran to Grandma Del telling her I needed my learner's permit for class so I can do some driving for it. "Okay, what is the next step now?" "I just need my proof of residence and my identity." "Well your parents need to do all that." Dad wasn't home because he was out doing community service. I went up to my room and picked up a magazine with my name and address on it. This would prove my residence. "Mom I got my proof of residence." "We have all week to do it," she said. "But I want my learner's permit now," I said. "That can wait, you have all week to do it." "But I want to drive tomorrow." "Natalie, getting it is not going to make you get your license any faster and you have lots of time to get your license." I felt anxious and I wanted all this now. I couldn't wait. I couldn't just have Grandma Del do it because she wasn't my guardian. I went out to walk skippy and this would give me some exercise and have me burn some calories. Skippy was acting very strange because he kept stopping and looking back behind me and I had to keep pulling his leash. He also kept growling. I kept walking and Skippy stopped and howled and barked. "Skippy, knock it off," I yelled. He kept barking up the street behind us and I looked and I saw a white jeep on the side of the street. I kept pulling at the leash and kept walking. I went on another block and Skippy acted fine again and then he was barking and I saw the same jeep again. I just kept on walking and then Skippy barked even more and the jeep got close to us and it started to pass by. The window rolled down and it was a man. "Sorry to bother you miss but can you tell me if there is a bank around here?" "Uh in town," I said. You just leave this neighborhood and turn right and you will be in town and you should see some banks if you stay on the main roads." "Thank you," he smiled. "Oh can I get your name?" "Natalie," I said. "Where do you live?" "In this neighborhood." "Which block?" "Just this neighborhood and I don't give out my address to strangers," I said. "I suppose you won't give out a last name either?" "Why?" I asked. Skippy was standing between me and the car. He showed his teeth at the man and growled. "Skippy, stop growling at the guy," I said. "Just curious so I know who I am talking to," said the man. "Why?" I asked. "I like to know peoples' names, what are you doing?" "Just walking my dog so I can burn some calories to lose weight." "To lose weight eh, you look good, you don't need to lose any more weight." He was moving alongside me as I walked. Skippy stayed between the car and me. "But my butt is big and so are my thighs, I want to make them smaller," I said. "I also want to get rid of my belly too to make it flat." Then another car appeared and the man rolled his window up and drove off and Skippy acted normal again. "Jeez Skippy, you act weird for nothing," I said. The jeep was gone and I didn't see it again. I came home after my walk. I thought it was strange someone would try and find a bank in the neighborhood or stop in the neighborhood to ask someone where the bank is. Wouldn't they stop at a store or something and ask but then I remembered my dad or Mom have asked random strangers where something is and they would tell them. Also maybe that guy might have been visiting someone here and he left their house and he saw me and asked but why wouldn't he have asked his friend or someone here he was seeing where a bank is? That man was very strange. I went in the den to play video games but my cousins were playing my Nintendo 64 again. "Ughhhh," I growled. "When are you guys going to move out?" I said. "A while," said Jesse. I saw Mom working in the living room. "How much longer until they move out?" I said. "I am hoping by the end of this Spring," said Mom. "That is too long, I can't even play my Nintendo anymore." Timmy wasn't even home either like Aunt Bridgett. I walked around the house again looking for things that needed to be cleaned. "Dish on the counter, it needs to go in the dishwasher," I shouted. I also checked the living room and said, "I see finger nails on the coffee table." Grandma Del came in the room and said "I will get that, Bridgett was clipping her nails and she didn't clean it up." She scooped the nails in her hand off the table and threw them away in the kitchen.
I felt anxious for the rest of the day because I couldn't wait to get my learner's permit and Dad couldn't help me with it because Mom could only drive and Grandma Del also said this didn't need to be done today so she wouldn't take me and Dad and Dad also agreed I had all week to get this done. "But I have school," I said. "So, you can miss some of it and you go when you are done," said Dad. "Really?" "Sure, getting a driver's license is the biggest step to take in your life. You can miss some school just to get a learner's permit and then you go to school." I felt happy to hear I could skip school to do this.
The next day I had that same class again and we read the textbooks again and did a mini quiz in it. We watched no videos this time and a couple people already had gotten their learner's permits. I envied them. I couldn't wait to get mine. They were able to get signed up for driving with David. When class ended again, I went home with Mom again. She had been sitting out in the welding area drawing while waiting so I had to wait for her to pack everything up. "Whoa, look at Natalie's Mom's drawing," said Tara. "Wow," said Amira. "I sell my drawings in my house, tell your parents about me and let them know I have a bunch of drawings and paintings they can look at," said Mom. "Our phone number is in the phonebook." Dad was gone again doing community service and Grandma Del had kept the house clean. I took Skippy for a walk again to get some exercise to burn calories. I had to get a good body. Skippy acted funny again and I looked and same the same jeep again. I ignored it and kept walking and Skippy kept growling. I tugged on his leash and kept on walking and when I looked behind me again, the jeep was still there and it had followed me. Was this man spying on me? I decided to run and I looked back and the jeep stayed. I kept running until it was out of my sight. I slowed down and walked and looked back and soon the same jeep appeared and it got closer to me and Skippy barked but it passed me. I felt calmer. "Stop it Natalie, you're being crazy," I said to myself. I kept walking and then the same jeep appeared. Maybe the person in it was just lost and it looked like the same jeep from yesterday. I saw it a couple more times and Skippy barked and growled. I walked home and no jeep was in sight when I walked up to my house and went inside. I felt like I was being stalked and spied on. Maybe it was just a coincidence. I went to Mom and Dad's bedroom and looked out their window to see if the same jeep would appear. I waited and waited and then I saw it again so I closed the shade and peeked and the jeep drove by slowly. I decided I was staying inside and never going out again by myself, I will only go in the backyard but never the front. I felt scared but I didn't know why. Why was I afraid of a car? 26th I didn't see the jeep again for the rest of the day until morning when I went to school. It was parked down the street. I got in the van and no one said anything about the jeep. Maybe I was just being paranoid. We left and I looked behind and the jeep followed. At least I was with other kids and a grown up so I didn't feel scared. We lost the jeep on the way and I didn't see it again until we got to school. It was in the parking lot parked in a parking spot. I went inside and went to Ms. Shepper's. I still didn't see Jason and I didn't care. After school I had to go straight home than to drama and that same jeep was there but in a different parking spot this time and it stayed there when we left. "What are you looking at Natalie?" Gary asked. "Nothing," I said. "It looked like you were staring at something." What was I going to tell him? That I think this white jeep is following me and then he thinks I am crazy? I saw the same white jeep again when I got home but it was parked in front of someone's house again down the road from my home. I ran in my house a quickly as possible when I got out of the van. "Natalie, you need to walk Skippy," said Grandma Del. "Have someone else do it please," I said. "You name is on the chore list to do it," she said. "Then switch me with someone else," I said. "No, you are assigned to walk him." "I can’t go outside, I am not comfortable because I think there is some man following me in his white jeep," I said. "What?" "I told her about the jeep and the man in it looking for the bank and seeing that same jeep again. Grandma Del shook her head saying "You have an imagination there, people have the same cars and same car color but you will be fine and you know not to ride in cars with strangers. This is a very safe neighborhood." "Can you go for a walk with me?" I asked. "I am cooking right now." "Mom can take over." "Natalie, you're just anxious but once you go for a walk and relax, this will all go away." I got my shoes on again and got my coat and leash and Skippy and went out the laundry room door and stayed in the backyard. I was not going in the front yard. I let Skippy run around the yard and I stayed put. I saw the trash can again for the diapers. I peeked inside and there were mine in there and Mom's. I couldn't tell which were mine because ours were the same and they were all in trash bags. I waited and then I heard Mom calling Skippy. Then Grandma Del was shouting my name and I didn't answer. Instead I went back inside and opened the laundry room door. "Right here," I said. "I let him in the back." "You were not gone that long," said Grandma Del. "Natalie, walk the dog properly," said Mom. "I don't feel comfortable going out there by myself, I want someone to come with me," I said. "She thinks she is being followed," said Grandma Del. "Followed? Who is following her?" Mom asked. "Some car," said Grandma Del. "I have seen that car here and at my school and it has followed me when I would walk Skippy and he always barks and growls at it," I said. "I will walk him with you," said Mom. She got her shoes on and everything and we left with Skippy. Mom asked me to show her this car I am talking about. I looked for the Jeep and it was still there. I showed Mom. She got close to it and I followed her. I felt safe and I didn't think the guy in it would try and hurt me or do anything bad with her here. The man inside was wearing a hat and Mom was peeking inside the window. The man looked at her and rolled his window down. "Are you lost?" Mom asked. "No, I am just waiting for a friend I am picking up," he said. "Which friend and which house?" "Is it any of your business?" he said to Mom. "Yes because this is a crime watch neighborhood, did you see the signs, there is one right there," she pointed to the light post. "We report any suspicious activity." The man then drove off. Mom and I went back to walking Skippy and when we got back, she picked up the phone. "What are you doing?" Grandma Del asked. "Making a call." "Who you calling?" Mom put the phone down and went upstairs. I went in the den and my Nintendo 64 was being played. Not again. "Don't you guys ever stop playing?" I said to Timmy, Jesse, Jaymee, and Matthew. I watched them play for a little bit and then Mom was calling me. I went upstairs and she had me talk on the phone with an officer and he asked me questions about the jeep and asked if I knew the license plate number and what the license plate was. I told him I didn't know and it was a Washington License plate. Then he asked me when I first saw the jeep and what places I saw it at and what locations. I told him and he told me he would put it on their report. "Are you going to do anything about the jeep?" I asked. "He has not broken any laws but we do put it on record what you reported and that way if he does anything, it will be on record, we can’t do anything about the man if he hasn’t done anything but if he does, let us know." I handed the phone back to Mom. She started talking again when I left. "So it's not illegal to stalk someone?" Mom asked. "No proof? Why not just do your job and have someone come here and watch the neighborhood and go to her school and watch for the car? So hire more officers." I told Grandma Del Mom was calling the police because of that white jeep. She went upstairs quickly. Then I was hearing them fight up there. Oh no what have I done? "Get out of my room," Mom shouted. "Ow, ow ow ow," I heard Grandma Del saying. "Then get out," Mom shouted. Aunt Bridgett rushed up the stairs. Amber who was also in the family room also followed after her and then Matthew and me. We went in the master bedroom and Mom and Grandma Del were grabbing at each other and Mom was pulling her hair and Grandma Del was grabbing her arms. The phone was still off the deck. "Hey," said Aunt Bridgett. "Tell her to get out of here," said Mom. "She is calling the police about a car Natalie thinks is following her and all she is doing is wasting their time," said Grandma Del. Aunt Bridgett told Mom to let go of their mother's hair and to just relax and take a deep breath. "Mom, just back off will you," said Aunt Bridgett. "Ever since you have gotten here, you have been fighting with her." "She doesn't need to be calling the police," said Grandma Del. "Why were you calling?" Aunt Bridgett asked Mom. Mom told her what I said and what happened when she went with me for a walk. "I don't see how that isn't suspicious. Who is secretive about seeing a friend and where they live and then driving off after hearing any suspicious activity gets reported?" said Aunt Bridgett. "Some people just have private lives," said Grandma Del." "So why did he drive off?" Mom asked. "Stop you two, Mom just back off will you," said Aunt Bridgett. Then the line started beeping and everyone ignored it so I hung it up. "Would you drive off if someone was trying to probe you?" Grandma Del asked. "What is so private about seeing a friend and where they live unless they are doing something they shouldn't even be doing or he would have at least make up a lie," said Mom. Grandma Del gave up fighting with Mom and left the room. Mom was still upset because she was still walking around in circle and shaking her arms and hands. All I know is when she gets like this, leave her alone or else you make it worse. Aunt Bridgett seem to knew this too because she didn't do anything either. I had to be careful what I tell Grandma Del or I would start another fight again. I never went outside again and Mom did leave to go get Dad and I asked him if he saw any white jeep and he said he didn't. "Why do you ask?" he asked. "I'm just curious," I said. "Natalie believes it is following her," said Mom. "Why do you think that?" Dad asked me. I told him why and Mom said he just drove off when she told him we reported any suspicious activity and showed him the neighborhood watch sign. "Are you sure that car is harassing her?" Dad asked. "I reported it," said Mom. "Sadly they won't do anything about it." "They have to be sure they are actually harassing her," said Dad. "Not enough evidence, they can't do anything about it. Why would someone want to harass her?" "There are predators out there," said Mom. "But why would they come to this neighborhood or to her school? If I wanted to prey on a vulnerable teen, I would go to a bar or to a strip club or just pick up some random girl I see in town but I wouldn't do it in a neighborhood like this or go to a school and look for a specific girl and even pop in her neighborhood again." "Maybe it's someone who knows her," said Mom. "Natalie, did you recognize the man in the car?" "Yeah, he talked to me on Saturday when I was walking Skippy and he asked me where the bank was and wanted to know my name and where I lived." "Did you tell him all that?" Dad asked. "Only my name and saying I live in this neighborhood but nothing else." "But did you recognize him at all when you first saw him?" "No." "We should call the school tomorrow and let them know about this so they can also keep an eye out for the car," Dad told Mom. I was feeling better. The more that people see the car, the more who will call the police and report it and the more evidence they have it is following me. I wondered what would a guy want with me?
27th The next day the jeep was not back but I did see it at school when Mom dropped me off after taking me to the DMV for my learner's permit and I wondered what the hell. I told Mom about it and she said she would let them know. She parked the car and we got out, I had to check in at the office and Mom started to tell Mrs. Peggy about the white jeep and how I have been seeing it here and in my neighborhood and she asked if any teachers or any staff here owned a white jeep. "No, not that I know of," said Mrs. Peggy. "Call the police then and let them know then because I have already reported it and they won't do anything about it unless they have enough evidence." "I need to find out first if the car belongs to anyone here," said Mrs. Peggy. "You just said no one here drives it," Mom pointed out. "It could be a car they are using for now, people have more than one car you know." "I am going to get the license plate number then," said Mom. "Natalie, get to class," Mrs. Peggy told me. I left and Mom stayed in the office. I went to Ms. Shepper's again. I was hoping it was just a coincidence that jeep belonged to a teacher here and the license plate would be different in the neighborhood. I decided if I see it again, I would get the license plate number and write it down and see if it matches the one here too so that way I would know if it's the same jeep. It looked exactly the same and that same jeep was still there but it was in a different parking spot when I left school but I did not see it in the neighborhood again. I felt better.
